@brockseeman @falseflagfeehan @dennistlin You’re choosing to include the air above the line as “territory.” I think most people would only include the ground itself as “territory.” I think the spirit of the rule is only talking about the ground itself. Either way, maybe MLB should clean up the writing of the rule.

When contacted about last night's controversial fair/foul call, an MLB spokesperson pointed to the definition of a fair ball in the league's umpire manual: "When in contact with the ground, a ball must be in contact with fair territory ... to be fair." nytimes.com/athletic/72366…

@wmoselle @dennistlin Im not saying it was touching the chalk on the ground, im saying it was touching the territory as defined by the perpendicular upward space of the edge of the foul line as defined in "fair tettitory" which is where the player touched it

This is just objectively wrong. Not meant to be personal. But the ball was clearly not touching the foul line (which should be called the fair ball line I think). Part of it MAY have been protruding over but part of the ball was actually touching the white chalk line on the ground. Is your insistence that it was a troll?

@brockseeman @lluvrofsports @dennistlin You are missing the point. The rule (or the official interpretation of the rule) *changed* to only take into account the part of the ball that touches the ground, not a side of the ball off the ground. (I don’t think it was fair under the old rule, but no more invisible lines.

@anshelsag @lluvrofsports @dennistlin Yes it was. I just told you the definition of fair territory. If you take a thread from the edge of the foul line and go straight upward with it, like the definition says, then that thread will hit the ball. Meaning its touching fair territory, maybe not the ground but territory

@lluvrofsports @dennistlin Yes it was, the definition of fair territory is the space between the foul lines and a perpendicular line upwards. Equator of the ball was touching fair territory via that perpendicular upward line

@BenVerlander But the ball is touching fair territory when the player touched it. Fair territory is the space from the foul line and the perpendicular line upward from it, explaining the "break the plane" comparison

@jeffschlossberg @Ecnerwal23 He was in the only angle that mattered, straight in line with the foul line. Seeing that it was touching fair territory, a fair ball
