Granted, he did direct the Peter Rabbit movies (which are also pretty good, in my opinion), but one look at his resume shows primarily originals, and that's impressive.

@MisterCoat True, and people still (so far) go see the Toy Story films in droves (the last two grossed a billion each). I do think there's a cultural difference with how the Japanese treat their characters though.

I've gotten replies pointing out Woody and Buzz have primarily been in feature films and at some point their story needs to end. But in Japan, characters like Doraemon, Detective Conan and Godzilla have been in way more movies and nobody there complains.

I've said this many times before, but Woody and Buzz Lightyear are Pixar's equivalent to Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. These are such important characters to the studio, why should they stop giving them new adventures?

@PaulTassi My face is not worth that much money, so the likelihood of me being able to trademark it is very low.

@PaulTassi The funny thing is, only celebrities can really do this. We all have a right of publicity through which we can protect our likenesses, but full on trademark protection requires a level of brand recognition and business/financial clout that most normal people don't have.

I see a lot of people saying that this feels like a Glen Powell-kind of role (probably because of the wig and facial hair), but I honestly thought of Zachary Levi in 'American Underdog' first. I've been curious about this movie.

First look at David Corenswet in ‘MR. IRRELEVANT’. The film follows John Tuggle, who was given the title of ‘Mr Irrelevant’ after being the last pick of the last round of the 1983 NFL draft.  In theaters on December 25.

@aakashgupta Not to mention, Sweeney has anchored two original films, Anyone But You, and Immaculate, prior to Housemaid, which were both successful originals. Zendaya has curated a very strong brand of own, but I think Sweeney herself also has pull. Both are arguable draws in their own ways.

@aakashgupta so it was not able to capture an audience. The Housemaid, meanwhile, beyond even being based on a book, had proper studio support in the form of strong advertising, a good release date, and concentrated it's marketing around Sweeney and Seyfried, and it succeeded.

This comparison actually proves the opposite of what you think it proves. Sydney Sweeney released 5 movies in the last 12 months. Americana: $500K. Eden: $2.8M. Christy: $1.9M. Reality went straight to streaming. Four consecutive disasters before The Housemaid landed. The Housemaid made $399M because a Freida McFadden bestseller with 4 million copies sold did the marketing for free. Put almost any recognizable actress in that role and it clears $200M. The book carried the box office. Now look at The Drama. $28M budget. Returned it in 7 days. #2 A24 wide release opening ever. 80% of the audience under 35. Original script, no source material, no franchise safety net. Just Zendaya's name on a poster for a Kristoffer Borgli dark comedy. Zendaya is running a completely different playbook. Spider-Man. Dune. Challengers. The Drama. She prints money in franchises, then spends that equity on original work with top-tier directors. She's building an Emmy and Oscar path. Every project is a deliberate choice from a position of strength. Sweeney has the talent. The project selection has been uneven. The $399M number looks like a win until you realize four other bets lost money the same year. One hit out of five is a 20% batting average. The Drama's $34M worldwide in week one on an original script is a flex most actors in Hollywood cannot pull off right now. One of these careers is architected. The other is still figuring out the blueprint.

Left: - Zendaya-led movie - Budget: $28 million - Struggling to break even Right: - Sidney Sweeney-led movie - Budget: $35 million - Shatters box office projections with $398 million BO total I think Hollywood just got first-hand evidence of what people ACTUALLY want to see

And at the end of the day, the box office is not a sprint. More often, it's a marathon, and the full picture of a movie's success is not clear until several weeks after release. Housemaid didn't gross nearly $400M in a few days. The Drama's been out of a week. Let it breathe.

They're both two very different films which differ in tone, sensibility, and goals as pieces of entertainment. I just find this comparison between the two is very simplistic. The Drama does not need to do Housemaid numbers. The Housemaid doing that well was a surprise on its own.

Do I think The Drama is going to be as big a hit as The Housemaid? No. But this is wildly, and unfairly skewed. Beyond a lot of other factors, The Drama is on it's second weekend of release. I don't think it's at all fair to say it's struggling to break even.

@Luiz_Fernando_J I really surprised this is tracking for a single digit opening. I'm hoping for more, obviously, but if it does end up opening in single digits, I hope it can leg out like 'Solo Mio'. Another romantic movie set against an Italian backdrop, it could happen.
