Just returned from a pretty big trip. With just six guys and this picture from 1935, we managed to locate, reach, and photograph a truly hidden wonder: King Edward VIII Falls, the tallest waterfall in Guyana. After extensive research, interviews with locals, and discussion with the Guyanese government, it's clear: We are among just a handful of people who have ever seen this incredible place.

I feel bad for Judo guys. They don't do well in MMA. But that's because MMA uses this soft pad for flooring. That isn't realistic. If I throw someone with velocity and land on top of them on a hard surface, they are knocked out. Throws are the knockout punch of grappling. Judo evolved from hand to hand military use. It works. MMA just neutralizes it with this strange artificial padding surface.

This was such a cool, sneaky throw by Nate. But it shows the weakness of a lot of judo/Greco-style throws in MMA: they’re built for the launch, not the landing. Perry easily scrambled on top.

@adesertdryad Really puts things in perspective to consider that Cleopatra lived closer in time to us than to the Great Pyramids of Giza.

kind of interesting that Egyptian civilization lasted so long that Thutmose IV experienced the Sphynx as an ancient ruin

@george__mack This is actually a lot more helpful than the "high agency triangle" because it helps identify where you're lacking, instead of prompting you to pat yourself on the back.

“The face that launched a thousand ships” comes from the play Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe (the preeminent Elizabethan playwright just before Shakespeare’s day). The line is spoken by Faustus when he gazes upon a conjured vision of Helen:

Do you guys think it's better to post quotes as text, or as screenshots? Example of the same quote both ways: "Augustine said to a group of people, 'We are talking about God. What wonder is it that you do not understand? If you do understand, then it is not God.'" – Annie Dillard, For The Time Being, Vintage Books, 2000, pg. 47.

People really missed BAP's endorsement of human diversity and differentiation. This is the opposite of the "billions must die" stuff.

@AdamPippert I’m sure it’s good at those functions! But those more general research tasks are probably less than 10% of my weekly work.

@bronzebust I’m also in tech sales, and I use AI quite a bit… but don’t do anything you describe above. I’m aligned to a much smaller customer pool, so take this with a grain of salt. I have it do things like research competition, public perception of my own company, analyze 10-Ks, etc.

I work in tech sales at a small, highly profitable health tech startup. For the last six months, I seriously tried to "leverage AI" and incorporate it into my work. It honestly didnt move the needle too much for me; I was able to automate some routine tasks, but otherwise I just hit roadblocks. Three possibilities here: 1. I'm not creative and I'm missing ways that it could help me out. 2. Im not using the right tools in the right way. 3. Sales is actually pretty AI-proof, for the time being.
