Yesterday, I joined @nycpa, @sen_gounardes, @senschumer, @cmsusanzhuang, @senstevechan, and other fellow elected officials in Sunset Park to celebrate the recent Lunar New Year with local families.

This senseless act of gun violence shook our community. All because of a decision to settle a dispute with gunfire, with no regard for who might be harmed. With homicides in Brooklyn at a record low, this is exactly the kind of violence that we must fight against and never accept

Today, @nypdpc and @BrooklynDA announced the indictment of 36 gang members involved in 36 shootings, including one fatal. These members belong to rival gangs in Brownsville —and now their reign of terror has come to an end.

Our work is far from over. This is a case we will remember for a long time, and I hope that it is a catalyst that ensures more resources are spent not just on the prosecution of cases but on the prevention of violent crime.

A video circulating online shows two police officers using excessive force while arresting a constituent in Gowanus. To spare the community the brutality, I am not sharing the footage. I remain in contact with the NYPD and am demanding a full investigation, as well as the immediate removal of these officers from our streets. I will share updates as more information becomes available.

This takedown is one part of our comprehensive strategy to drive down shootings across Brooklyn. Our success in focusing on the drivers of crime while also working with community groups on preventative efforts, led to record low gun violence with major declines in Brownsville.
