The DRMA has a revision provision in it and it has not been ever reviewed. I think having gone through both the COVID pandemic where that legislation was a mechanism that was used for responding then, and now the Beryl experience, we ought to see that review initiated. I am told by disaster risk management experts and people who have experience in this field that there are concerns about the way the framework is being operated and we need to have that review done through a proper procedure in Parliament, a joint select committee reviewing the Act, as the Act itself has called for but has not been done.

We along with the BOJ have been sitting in Parliament since Noon for the Standing Finance Committee at which the BOJ is presenting. This meeting is supposed to happen twice a year. All MPs, sitting as the Standing Finance Committee, get to question the Governor of the Bank of Jamaica and his team interest rates and monetary policy. The meeting was supposed to start at 12 o’clock midday, but at 12:45 pm we still haven’t started because there’s no quorum. The quorum is 17 MPs, including the chairman. The only member of government present is Nigel Clarke. Time Come for Good Governance.

No matter how you slice it, Jamaica needs a competent Minister of Health. The health of mothers and newborns is at risk due to an inadequate public healthcare system in Jamaica.
