Former foes the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)—who previously united in the early 20th century against warlords and Japanese invasion—are now increasingly aligning against Taiwanese sovereignty. KMT chair Cheng Li-wun is currently visiting China for an expected meeting with CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping, marking the first such visit by a standing KMT chief in a decade. Cheng has stated that the "1992 Consensus," an agreement positing that Taiwan is part of China, is the sole foundation for cross-strait peace. This directly contrasts with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) stance that Taiwan is already a sovereign, independent nation. The impending meeting highlights the shared Chinese ethno-nationalist roots of both parties, a context often overlooked by international media when describing the KMT merely as a standard Taiwanese opposition group. Originally founded in China in 1894, the KMT retreated to Taiwan in 1949 after losing to communist revolutionaries, subsequently imposing a 38-year martial law that violently suppressed local Taiwanese identity in favor of an imposed Chinese one. Following Taiwan's democratization in the 1990s and the subsequent electoral successes of the DPP, the KMT and CCP began normalizing relations in 2005, driven by a mutual refusal to accept the existence of a Taiwanese state. In recent years, this relationship has deepened, characterized by flourishing high-level meetings between KMT politicians and CCP officials, even as Beijing conducts aggressive military exercises around the island. Despite this growing deference from the KMT, none of their cross-strait meetings have resulted in Beijing softening its ultimate demand that democratic Taiwan be absorbed into China. Domestically, the KMT—allied with the smaller Taiwan People's Party (TPP)—has actively blocked special defense budgets proposed by DPP President Lai Ching-te, effectively acting as a legislative proxy for Beijing's interests. Taiwanese officials warn that Xi's invitation to Cheng is a strategic move designed to cut off Taiwan's military procurement from the United States and undermine its international cooperation. By embracing the KMT while refusing to speak with DPP leadership, analysts suggest Xi is attempting to demonstrate his control over the Taiwan issue and project an image of Taiwanese political disunity. Ultimately, the optics of KMT leadership shaking hands with Xi threaten to complicate Taipei's vital relationship with Washington, intentionally deepening American doubts about Taiwan's underlying resolve to defend itself against a potential invasion. asia.nikkei.com/opinion/the-km…
