The government plans to restrict the right to jury trial - but has it considered the impact this change would have on the junior barristers it will rely on to defend and prosecute in the future? In a new guest blog, barrister Hannah Forsyth considers how different her experiences in the first 5 years of practice would have been if the proposed scheme had been in place - all of her jury trials would have been in front of a judge alone. The ramifications of being denied the experience of appearing before a jury, she writes, could lead to those at the start of their career being driven away from criminal practice altogether. So @wesstreeting @skinnock @zubirahmed. Have a read of this from 2016. It’s about autistic people and people with learning disabilities locked away in psych units like St Andrews. We’ve had endless meetings with people from @DHSCgovuk, @NHSEngland and @CareQualityComm in the 10 years since then. We’ve given evidence to @CommonsHealth and @HumanRightsCtte. We’ve written blogs, run an online exhibition and campaigned endlessly. And nothing has changed. Nothing. Isn’t it time now for a politician to actually do something? theatuscandal.wordpress.com/2016/04/25/jus…

CARE COMPANIES ARE BANNING PARENTS FROM SEEING THEIR DISABLED CHILDREN A woman with learning disabilities spent 17 years in Muckamore Abbey Hospital in Northern Ireland, a place now under police investigation for physical abuse and neglect. She was moved to a supported living facility. Her parents complained about the state of her flat, the food hygiene, the fact she hadn't been taken outside for ten months. So the care company disabled their key fob access without telling them. Restricted their visits. Froze them out. @ITVNews investigations editor Daniel Hewitt (@DanielHewittITV) has been contacted by hundreds of families across the UK who say the same thing happened to them. Complain about the care. Lose access to your loved one. The care industry has apparently decided that the most efficient way to handle complaints is to eliminate the complainants. In South London, a woman raises concerns about unexplained injuries and cuts on her niece. The council tells ITV News her niece is "happy and thriving." The visits are once a week, 4 to 7pm only, with seven days written notice, two staff watching from opposite ends of a table. Happy and thriving. 109 charities are now calling for Gloria's Law, which would give vulnerable adults the legal right to name a care supporter, a family member or friend who cannot simply be removed when the care company finds them inconvenient. Care Rights UK (@CareRightsUK) CEO Helen Wildbore put it plainly: the power sits entirely with the companies and councils. Families don't know where to go. They don't know the rules. They complain and they get punished. Care Minister Stephen Kinnock (@SKinnock) has promised new guidance. Guidance. For a system already ignoring the rules it has. The charities are calling for actual law. The government is calling for paperwork. There are people sitting in rooms right now who haven't seen their parents in months, because the care company found the parents inconvenient. That is what guidance is protecting. Thank you Lorraine @read_lorra14618 for mentioning me. This is not just something I have “seen”, it is something I have lived through. In my case, my daughter had formally granted me Power of Attorney. That should have meant her voice and her choice were protected. Instead, the Court of Protection removed it based on the opinion of a psychiatrist who claimed she lacked capacity six months before he had even met her. That is not just wrong, it goes directly against the law, which requires a proper, decision-specific and time-specific assessment. At the time, my daughter had already been properly assessed in line with legal requirements and found to have capacity. That evidence was ignored. By removing my legal authority, they did not “protect” her. They removed the one person she had chosen to stand beside her. They left her exposed, voiceless, and vulnerable within a system that was supposed to safeguard her. What is being reported here is not an isolated failure. It is a pattern: Raise concerns → lose access Speak up → get pushed out Protect your loved one → become the problem This is why families are fighting for real legal change, not guidance that can be ignored, but enforceable rights that cannot simply be taken away when they become inconvenient. Because without that, “care” becomes control. 📣 Tagging those responsible and those who report on these issues: Department of Health and Social Care @DHSCgovuk Care Quality Commission @CareQualityComm NHS England @NHSEngland Media: BBC News @BBCNews ITV News @itvnews Channel 4 News @Channel4News Journalists & commentators: Carol Vorderman @carolvorders Robert Peston @Peston Campaign & rights organisations: Liberty @libertyhq Mind @MindCharity Disability Rights UK @DisRightsUK Care Rights UK @CareRightsUK Political accountability: Wes Streeting @wesstreeting Keir Starmer @Keir_Starmer

Venice…… what a beautiful city and I’m feeling very blessed right now but also super proud of this young lady @warriorqueen93 who has travelled sooooo far since coming to @TMOFCharity The Maggie Oliver Foundation desperate for help about 3 years ago! She is a true inspiration and once again Jade is proof that with the right care, kindness, compassion and encouragement, a survivor failed in every way possible can still rise from the ashes and begin to transform her ‘pain into power’! Jade was broken when she came to us, and has since been helped by our whole team, from the dozens of emotional support calls she had, the advocacy support, our Group Therapy course and our peer to peer support. When the time was right we also put Jade forward with 2 other survivors we support to tell her story on a national platform in the @Channel4 documentary Groomed: A National Scandal. Since then she has continued to fly as her confidence has grown as we encouraged her to believe in herself….. We’ve been on numerous live tv discussions together now including @GMB @ITV @GBNEWS @triggerpod , @triggerpod and this week I took her to join me in a live speaking engagement for @privacysymp where we discussed her experiences and how the whole system failed her brutally! It was an audience made up of high ranking members of the ECHR, United Nations, signatories from Luxembourg, Switzerland etc etc And Jade blew them all away! With her honesty, her humility, her bravery and tbh her confidence! She has come sooooo far and is beginning to feel proud of herself. And rightly so! Raising awareness, spreading information, fighting for change, highlighting the failures and the corruption and the broken systems in our country! I feel so blessed to be able to share this journey with her, and walking through all the little cobbled streets of Venice , sitting in St Mark’s square in the sunshine sipping a wine and riding on the water taxi after we’d finished our work is a memory we will both treasure forever. And it’s a privilege to share these moments together as I watch this young lady turn into a swan….. 💕💕 And THIS is exactly why I started my charity! And this is why my team and I will never stop doing what we do. Seeing the transformation of a broken person as they grow and then begin to create a life and a future they’re excited about makes every single battle, fight, hate, attack we face absolutely worth it!!!! 💕

Jess Phillips admits there is a 'fundamental problem' around current stalking laws. Currently laws in England put a large onus on the victim to prove they were fearful or distressed during stalking experiences to secure higher sentences against perpetrators. Despite the challenges, Ms Phillips said it was important for victims of stalking crimes to still come forward. You can find more here: tinyurl.com/7p439su5
