Have they noticed yet that Idaho has a state income tax (which includes capital gains) that exempts only the first few thousand dollars of earnings? WA's $1M exemption is 103X the size of ID's for married couples filing jointly tax.idaho.gov/taxes/income-t…
Dobbs Truview@dobbstruview

What is it like moving to Idaho? I received the following letter from a friend who moved out of Washington late 2025. Dear _____, As you know, my wife and I moved to Northern Idaho in the third quarter of 2025. The long dreaded move came as result of Washington’s increasingly confiscatory tax regime which is certain to get worse. Now nearly six months into the move, we have found the following: There is a sense of freedom in North Idaho, we have only seen when traveling abroad and visiting with American expats. American travelers express a sense of freedom to speak more directly and openly than they feel at home. This is a common occurrence and often observed by Americans living abroad; There is a friendliness among our neighbors, all of whom are conservative, most are openly Christian; County officials are friendly, accommodating and pleasantly communicative; Contractors and sub-contractors show up at the appointed day and time to do remodel work on the house; Gasoline prices are consistently one dollar less than across the line into Washington. Food, shelter and clothing are marginally less expensive and the sales tax is 6% versus 8+% in Washington; There are more churches, of various stripe, per capita, mostly conservative and bible oriented; Although there is a small, loud LGBT community they are considered a mentally ill element who should be watched cautiously, but are viewed sympathetically as needing treatment; The public school system has some woke-ism in the curriculum, driven mainly by Progressive teachers but the state appears to be dealing with that problem; Immigration into the state has changed. Until about five years ago, most refugees were from California but most are now from Washington. Several real estate agents have moved from Washington to Idaho to facilitate moving here, providing contacts with contractors and even assistance with registering vehicles and registering to vote; Real estate prices are inordinately high due to strong demand by Washingtonians, but taper off marginally the farther one gets out of the Coeur d’Alene general area; Having grown up, raised a family, owned several businesses in Washington, making the decision to move was difficult for us. We remain in close contact with our circle of friends across Washington and they come to visit us; We have settled in. Have moved all of our assets out of Washington, except for two pieces of real estate which are going on the market in April; by mid-year we expect to be entirely out from under Washington’s tax regime; Many people are posting on “X” their wishes, or intentions to move out of state to protect financial assets or to protect their children or grandchildren from the increasingly predatory Child Protective Services. Everyone has different circumstances. But, until the Washington political scene changes, one’s entire net worth is in jeopardy from the Legislature and, perhaps even more discouraging, the state’s declared war on the parent/child relationship mandates protecting children from State facilitated predators. Band-aid measures aren’t the solution. Washington needs an entire makeover. Thanks for posting this note. I hope it is helpful for those sitting on the fence about making a move. Sincerely, Tom

Idaho has a 5.3% flat income tax and taxes capital gains as income A household with $1M in income & $278k in capital gains would owe the great state of WA $0 They'd owe ID >$67k I don't choose where to live based on tax rates, but for those who do - #OwnGoal

We met a couple on a recent vacation taking their first vacation together in 12 years of marriage He was a sailor on aircraft carriers who had lately submitted his retirement They told us about how long some of his multi-extended deployments had been He's a person not a robot
James R. Webb@JamesWebb_16

The sailors of the USS Ford have been at sea for more than 250 days with no end in sight. Contrary to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are not automatons or superhumans who can be deployed indefinitely without consequence, or kept in harm's way because “it's their job”. That’s 250 days without their families, homes, or “real” downtime. As we learned in the GWOT, extended deployments lead directly to low retention rates and burnout of the force. This situation would also be a great time for transparency from Washington on what’s really going on. As I see it, there are three possibilities: 1) Morale is exceptionally low, and it has manifested in this latest example of rebellion by the crew. 2)The Ford is yet another example of faulty, overpriced junk produced by the MIC, designed to require constant upgrades and tweaks to remain serviceable (see the F-35 for more). 3) It was hit by incoming fire. Publicly owning whatever reality is would be a smart move by Washington, as the truth will come out at some point. But for now, they seem to be determined to win this war using spin and hubris, which isn’t a strategy.

The notion that young people able to gross $40M a year playing the sport that they love will lose sleep over marginal tax rates from state to state is a truly sad statement about the mind and soul of those involved in making it
Jesse Proudman@jesseproudman

Seattle: "We want the NBA!" Also Seattle: Enacts 10% income tax on high earners and has terrible weather 3/4 of the year. NBA players: "Thanks but we'll pick Miami or anywhere else." NBA players making $40M+ will love paying $4M/year for the privilege of playing in Seattle.

3 sucks too. I've been trying for years to get something done there on a federal level, for certain stock options it really feels like the tax should be on transfer/liquidity. I've seen really bad things happen on just federal tax. Having $3m in a startup with a huge valuation is not being a millionaire and no way that person just has another $200k lying around (nor would I want them to spend it).

Believe it or not @bfioca and I agree on a lot more than you think. We both want the same things for our lives, our city, and our families. We're also not afraid of making sacrifices to accomplish that. I deeply respect him for that! What we don't agree on though, is how we get there. I, along with others, have written letters to the Governor and House urging them to delay passing this bill. As I've said many times before, I am not against taxes nor a state income tax. Heck, in response to this situation I actually GOT A PLACE IN CALIFORNIA. I am against legislation that I know will destroy our economy. Regardless of people leaving over the passing of this bill or the obvious misallocation of funds within the state (I'm going to get very vocal on this later this year), this bill is simply poorly thought out and rushed. 1. It's illegal (that's just the starting point). 2. Many small business owners will be taxed on business operating income as if it was their actual income. 3. It counts employee stock options at exercise date. This means that for many employees, after years of working at a significantly reduced salary, after they exercise their (still likely) illiquid stock they may owe the state up to 10%. This is already a big problem for folks at the federal level but now makes stock options, the main tool for compensation in startups, functionally broken in Washington State. 4. It penalizes marriage in a way that our recent capital gains tax does not.

A functioning democracy requires differences, especially on the how. I just can't let it slide that they are rushing this legislation (which doesn't even go into effect for years) through an already a condensed session (election year). Even worse, they are making it so that we can't go back and revisit it... and are also adding in legislation to block non-union lobbying. The truth is that this is all political... it has nothing to do with actually caring about Washingtonians, its a runaway party wanting a "win" at all costs before election season. It's just sad.

@WaGov_US Idaho has a 5.3% flat rate income tax. A household making $1,00,100 in W2 earnings here under the new law would owe the great state of Washington $9.99 They'll owe the state of Idaho $53,005

Hey Bobby Boy, I have millionaire family that was looking to move to WA State. They just decided against it. They have decided to move to Eagle, Idaho instead. You had a great opportunity to bring in a power couple with lots of money, skills, and business. @GovBobFerguson

Let me add the POV of a former police administrator here: if you're paying OT for emphasis patrols and the like, officers need to be MOVING ON FOOT in hot spots, not sitting in cruisers We have bodycams & cell phone GPS for this Enforce that and at least we'd get some value for $
DivestSPD@DivestSPD

Not to one-up y'all here, but just two? Just $250k??!? 400 Seattle cops cleared $200k in 2024. Sgt. Paige Maks (pictured sleeping below) pulled in over half a million.

Washington state engineering a 4.7 point taxpayer advantage over California is good news, actually #waleg (And as a Seattle resident, I'd suggest benchmarking against NYC and SF proper - at tax parity, we can be the place where your housing dollar goes twice as far. Sweet deal.)

A proposed “millionaire’s tax” in Washington State would yield the highest combined state and local top income tax rate in the country. Read more: hubs.ly/Q045t2RJ0 #Washington #MillionaireTax

@aviel @seattletimes I think "slow things down" won't hunt today because of how far behind the 8 ball we've gotten But something like "in 24 months could we come up with a tax plan that = WA state GPD growing 2X the national rate while public revenue keeps pace with GPD growth" might

California has a 100x (and increasing) advantage in my world (startups), so any comparison is unfair. None of the Dems (the only people that really matter) will have the conversation, heck the Mayor of Cleveland is down to talk (and fly folks out) but not a peep from Katie Wilson or Bob Ferguson. The direct ask has been to slow these things down, work together over the summer, and bring them back next legistlative session. The response has been worse than a no. So that's where I'm at.

Hey @seattletimes, are you aware that the author of seattletimes.com/opinion/im-an-… is only writing this because he didn't actually make any money on the DataStax to IBM acquisition and is taking out his frustration by wanting to tax those that are successful? His shares were underwater. I can confirm as a former investor in DataStax. Do better.

@aviel @seattletimes Seriously propose tax ideas that balances things out (CA keeps crushing it on VC despite taxing income and capital gains). Tell legislators "here's an idea that squares the circle on a great tech economy versus relying on taxes on people on the low end." That's where I'm at.

@bryan_kirschner @seattletimes Landing the plan to meaningful liquidity is so, so, so much harder than people realize, which is why I'm adamant about Washington State keeping incentives to promote startups and entrepreneurship.
