@kelseyhightower @davidcrawshaw “Don’t use N computers when one computer will do.” This is the way! There’s a lot that one computer can do before you have to think about really complicated scaling.

@TCagley One of the biggest benefits of 10+ years of working remotely has been the chance to focus on just one thing at a time by simply not being in an office and having the ability to disconnect from chat for blocks of time.

@QuinnyPig @golang The great part about go is that you can teach yourself enough of the language in an afternoon so that you can actually solve real problems!

I regret to inform you all that I spent the afternoon teaching myself @golang to solve an obnoxiously trivial problem and... somehow it worked!?

@ChrisSinjo @mdlayher I agree with this, but it’s sometimes challenging to get non-developers to contribute this way. Which means everything then has to get inserted by developers and/or pieces of info get dropped.

@mdlayher The bad part of this is that someone probably learned to check for this the hard way…

SA9007: "Writing d := os.TempDir() defer os.RemoveAll(d) in your unit tests will have a devastating effect on the stability of your system." Yikes! Glad there's a new check for this. #golang #SA9007" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">staticcheck.io/docs/checks/#S

@bphogan I agree with this mostly but… if you’re paralyzed by trying to figure out what the exact right thing is, just doing something that’s not completely wrong will at least give you some momentum

@crichardson Yes, embedded telecom devices. Drivers are especially hard to test locally. Moving from vxworks to linux was a big leap because we didn’t have to rebuild and reflash a big monolith and could structure tests better, at least for application code.

Have you ever worked on an application that you couldn't test locally on your laptop? If so, what were the obstacle? And what was the impact on your productivity?

I know not everyone uses vim, so here are a few pointers to how to use similar functionality in other editors. I can't vouch for any of these, this is just a quick survey across editors I've seen people using.

@simonw I thought this was just me Or that I’m too old school But I’ve tried the SPA route a couple of times and even though it seems like it should be a cleaner architecture it end up being more of a mess. Now I’m just going all in on the traditional setup

Time after time, I see talented developers who are clearly operating in good faith decide to switch to the SPA route ... with the inevitable end-result of a slower, buggier product that takes significantly longer to ship I must be missing something - what am I missing?
