In stressful situations, I'm compelled to think out loud (on the internet). I still have a ton of clean up to do as it's super stressful not knowing the exact attack vector. But this needs to be said and reminded to people who attend IRL conferences with BTC Vegas coming up. This drain on my EVM hot wallets took place while I was in DC for the Opnext conf. I got there Friday AM, left Sunday AM. Was at the event all day Friday, and til about 6pm on Sat. Hack was roughly 1am Sunday morning. I am in no way blaming anyone at the conf, I think the odds are low, but while low, it's still very coincidental timing. I share this moreso as a reminder to be diligent. At most conferences, my phones are in the faraday bag. I don't bring my laptop. I scan nothing, log into nothing, etc. I have one burner phone to make calls, check twitter, use Uber and that's about it. I had my laptop out a lot at this conf. Phone was not in the bag. I did NOT use the public wifi, but many people did. Could someone close have infected my phone or laptop? Maybe. Again, not blaming anyone, and I think the guys put on a great conf that I'm very happy I attended. But it serves as a reminder, to always keep your opsec guard up, especially at IRL events. Seriously considering skipping Vegas now bc of this. But if I do go, no tech with wallets will be on me, no charging of devices, only using cash, etc.
