British archaeologists have made a fascinating discovery of medieval gravestones while investigating the site of an ancient shipwreck. According to a press release, the carved slabs, made from Purbeck marble, were part of the cargo aboard England’s oldest known historic shipwreck. This vessel sank off the Dorset coast during the 13th century, in the reign of Henry III. The king, who was the son of King John, ruled England from 1216 until his death in 1272. Photographs reveal that the grave slabs are astonishingly well-preserved, even though one is encrusted with barnacles.

Strong winds, no vis, and dealing with every #WAFI under the sun but nothing beats diving on an 800 year old shipwreck in preparation for something big 🧐

Before Christmas I showed you the portable font at Waltham Abbey, #Essex, but here's the big one for today's #FontsOnFriday. Plain and capacious, apparently dating from about 1200, but surely recut. Sources say purbeck, but who I am to say? Plus its two red guards🧯🧯...
