Kōzō Okamoto was a Japanese revolutionary who joined the Japanese Red Army and fought against the Israeli occupation in the 1970's. In 1972, he took part in the Lod Airport operation in Israel, in coordination with the PFLP – General Command. He was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1985, he was released in a prisoner exchange and moved to Lebanon, where he was granted political asylum. The US is going after civilian infrastructure in Iran, a clear war crime. Why is it doing that and what does it mean?:
1) The strike killed at least eight people and injured 95 others. Attacks on infrastructure essential to modern society amount to collective punishment of the civilian population rather than just defeating a military. The civilian harm clearly outweighs the military benefit.
2) The IRGC has identified bridges in U.S.-allied nations, including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, as potential targets. That will be another war crime and harm more people.
3) This marks a dangerous shift from targeting purely military sites to civilian industry and transportation infrastructure, potentially indicating a policy of destroying Iranian society.
4) More than the target matters, it is a form of coercion. The idea is to force Tehran to make a deal before it is too late and threatening to hit Iran extremely hard if negotiations do not progress. That is very unlikely to help. Iran is determined to wait out anything the US and Israel do to claim victory. Their time table is longer and they have more strategic patience.
The escalation to civilian infrastructure targets by the US is a war crime and will certainly lead to more war crimes on both sides. But it will have no beneficial strategic consequences for the US. It will just further plunge the region into misery.
