I am almost certain Israel brought invasive diseasee carrying rodents into Gaza as yet another weapon against a trapped civilian population. As if bombing children, starving families, destroying hospitals, and spreading disease weren’t enough. These rats do not belong to Gaza’s ecosystem, yet suddenly they’re everywhere while people are forced to live among rubble, corpses, sewage, and famine. At this point, nothing Israel does feels beyond deliberate cruelty anymore.

A rapidly spreading rodent and pest infestation is sweeping through displacement camps across Gaza, with the World Health Organization recording over 70,000 cases of ectoparasite infections since the start of 2026. A UN rapid assessment of more than 1,600 displacement sites found rodents and pests visible in over 80 percent of them, affecting roughly 1.45 million displaced Palestinians living in tents pitched beside mountains of rubble, overflowing sewage, and uncollected waste left behind by the Israeli occupation's destruction of Gaza's sanitation infrastructure.
The Gaza Ministry of Health has confirmed at least four deaths from skin diseases linked to the infestations, while families describe waking to find their children bitten in their sleep, with rats crossing over their faces at night. Cases of scabies, lice, and bedbugs are reported in nearly every affected household, and health officials warn that without functioning labs, testing materials, or proper pesticides, a wider outbreak of rodent-borne disease, including the possibility of plague, can no longer be ruled out. Majd Sukar, head of the Preventive Health Department in Gaza City, summed up the situation by saying Palestinians are now living through "two wars: the war of bombs, and the war of rats."
