#mythbusting 1. You CAN get a building permit for strawbale buildings anywhere in the USA. It is 100% code compliant 2. No, a strawbale home will not burn down. No oxygen=no fire 3. Yes, you absolutely can build with strawbales in wet muggy humid climates! #noexcuses #yesyoucan

I cannot believe I am writing this...but I want to give you a sneak peek of what's in store in 2024. I'm partnering with GenSafaris to offer 2 natural building workshops each partnered with a curated safari in Tanzania!! 🦓🐅🐘🦒🦏🦛🦧 We're still sorting out details #StayTuned

@peachcobblair high calcium lime such as Mississippi Lime VitaCal or Carmeuse high calc lime. These are not the same as regular mason's lime unless you are purchasing specifically for plaster. And I would never purchase lime from HomeDepot...will not be high enough quality

@buildnaturally Do you apply this directly on cob? We tried using Saint Aster lime plaster on cob and it flaked and fell off after the first winter. Does calcium lime putty mean just mason's like? Can we get this from a regular hardware store like Home Depot?

@peachcobblair I don't build exterior walls with cob in cold climates...I use strawbale instead and keep the clay to the interior. (This ensures max energy efficiency) I also don't use hydraulic limes (which St. Astier is). They are not vapor permeable enough IMO I use high calcium lime

@berrystucco not sure your question exactly. I have made sinks and showers that were clay sealed with linseed or tung oil. Both are extremely durable and hold up to the wet conditions without the need for lime

@buildnaturally Impervious surfaces go with lime plaster; "Tedelakt" not with clay, am I right?

@peachcobblair I use either VitaCal from Mississippi Lime or High Calcium lime from Carmeuse, and then soak it in water for at least 6 weeks (longer is better)

@perennialfarmer if you hire out everything, and build the exact same thing (including the same energy efficiency), then it costs similar to conventional construction. Difference is you pay people for their labor more than companies for materials.

@buildnaturally What are the lines? If you don't do any of the construction yourself how do the materials and construction costs compare to a conventional home building nowadays?
