Memorial Day hits different for me... it always has.
I didn’t serve. I don’t have any family who served. My friends who did serve all survived (thank God).
Memorial Day is humbling. I’m deeply aware that my freedom exists because of others’ sacrifice. They gave their lives, lost their loved ones, and buried their friends.
Why?
...so that Americans like me could know peace and freedom. I cannot repay what so many of you gave. All any of us can do is try to live lives that reflect the values and patriotism those brave heroes died protecting.
God bless every military member and their families on this most precious of days. 🇺🇸

This cemetery in Tunis near the ruins of ancient Carthage hold those lost in Operation Torch the US entry into WW2. Memorial day started off as Decoration Day to in 1868 to honor fallen Civil War soldiers it was a grassroots movement by devastated communities to decorate fallen soldiers' graves.
Decoration day stayed as a holiday to commemorate fallen civil war soldiers till World War 1 and evolved from there to commemorate all fallen soldiers in All American wars, not just the civil war.
To understand how devastating the United States civil war was their was an estimated ~750,000 soldiers killed (battle and disease combined). When including wounded and captured, total casualties exceeded 1.7 million.
With a national population of about 31.4 million in 1860, this means:
Roughly 1 out of every 40 Americans died during the war
About 1 out of every 18 Americans was killed, wounded, or captured
By the end of the war, over 3 million men had served in Union and Confederate armies combined representing roughly 55% of the fighting-age male population (based on ~5.6 million men aged 18–45).
Based on Fighting-Age Male Population (5.6 million) The toll of the civil war becomes even more staggering.
About 1 in 7–8 men Killed
About 1 in 14 men Wounded
About 1 in 8 men Prisoners Of War
About 1 in 3 men was a Casualty.
The scale of loss was unlike anything in American history before or since. In many rural communities, both North and South, the war’s impact was so severe it amounted to an entire generation of men lost and the impacts can still be felt to this day.
Whole towns abandoning farms when their sons were killed and the abandoned ruins now consumed by forest can be seen everywhere and nearly every community erected its own tribute.
