Starting May 1, 2026, the largest consumer market on Earth will fully open to African products: zero tariffs for 53 countries across the continent. President Xi Jinping announced it in a message to African leaders gathered at the African Union summit in Addis Ababa. Foreign Minister Wang Yi reinforced it: "We are removing tariffs completely to boost trade, multiply benefits for the people, and help Africa access the enormous opportunities of the Chinese market." • The numbers speak for themselves. China is already Africa's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding $222 billion between January and August 2025. But trade remains unbalanced: Chinese exports to Africa grew 24.7%, while African imports rose only 2.3%. This measure aims to level the playing field. 6A4 China will forgo roughly $1.4 billion in tariff revenue. A strategic economic diplomacy bet that strengthens its influence across a continent of 1.4 billion people, critical mineral reserves, and rapidly expanding markets. The only African country excluded is Eswatini, which maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The remaining 53 will have full access to the Chinese market.
