European Parliament declares trans women are women. In a landmark decision on Thursday (12 March), the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has mandated that EU member states must issue identification documents for transgender citizens that reflect their "lived gender" rather than their gender assigned at birth. This ruling comes in response to a case from Bulgaria's Supreme Court of Cassation, which sought guidance on the legality of changing documents for individuals who have transitioned. Lower courts in Bulgaria had determined that the country's officials had no right to change the individual's name, gender or national registry PIN however, the ECJ found that not allowing changes to gender identification could lead to significant inconveniences for trans citizens in their daily lives and travel across the EU. "Member state legislation which does not permit the amendment of the gender data of one of its nationals who has exercised his or her right to freedom of movement is contrary to EU law," read an ECJ statement. As the case, which began in 2017, returns to Bulgaria's courts, other EU nations that have resisted similar changes, such as Hungary and Slovakia, may also be compelled to reassess their policies regarding identification for transgender people. thepinknews.com/2026/02/18/eur…
