The Expanded Canal did more than add larger locks. It created a new lane of traffic and doubled the waterway’s cargo capacity. The Expansion included new lock complexes on the Atlantic and Pacific sides and required the excavation of more than 150 million cubic meters of material, one of the largest engineering efforts in the Canal’s modern history.
