Update on Mum & Puppies – Matara Rescue 🐾🐶
An important update on the mum and her puppies found on the main road in Matara:
Kim stepped in just in time to take them in, as they were facing serious danger. The following day, three more puppies, believed to be from the same litter, were discovered in the same drain. As the initial rescue took place at night, it’s likely they were simply not seen earlier.
The three missing pups have now been safely reunited with their mum. They were extremely hungry, having gone nearly 24 hours without feeding, but thankfully are now doing well.
In total, this devoted mum has nine puppies—a very large litter. She is being given regular, nutritious meals to help her stay strong and care for her babies. She is a wonderful, attentive mother, and seeing her now—calm and relaxed with her puppies—is a stark contrast to the distress she showed on that busy road, anxiously trying to protect them. It truly says everything.
This situation also highlights the importance of neutering.
We understand that this dog had previously been difficult to catch for a local sterilization program, which sadly led to this outcome.
This rescue brings significant pressure on the charity. Caring for 10 additional dogs means covering the costs of blood tests, distemper/parvo testing, food, vaccinations, sterilization (when they’re old enough), and ultimately finding them loving homes—which, as many know, is not easy.
The sanctuary is full to the brim ! We lack support for expansion and 3.5 acres of adjoining land remains undeveloped. It's so frustrating as we really need more space and support.
The current foster arrangement is only temporary, as Kim will be leaving soon, so ongoing support and future plans will be crucial.

People like @scanme_tukslaw and @AdoptionsUk are trying to save dog from euthanasia day in day out.
There is little thanks for it and it is a relentless job. These are the unsung heroes for animals and I can’t thank them enough for all they do.
They have educated me SO much in the plight of dogs in our country and I will do ALL I can to help.

I want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us since my last appeal. Over the past few days we have raised enough to get us into next month 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😇 It's a constant worry and struggle to keep going, so when we have a good month, we TRULY appreciate the support 🙏🏻 I see huge accounts and charities who are doing very well, being constantly promoted, so PLEASE think of supporting small charities who struggle not only to get donations, but also struggle to get recognised.
We were recently put forward to take part in a share of a $10,000 giveaway, but I noticed we were fighting a losing battle when these large accounts were being put forward by all their followers. We were obliterated, so I stopped pushing for it. It's so mentally devastating when you know they're already doing so well and you're struggling to maintain the basics.

Every day, we see scenes like this… helpless litters born on busy roads, with almost no chance of survival.
Right now, our sanctuary is beyond full. We’re caring for over 2,000 rescued dogs—many disabled, many survivors of abuse—and we’re struggling just to get through each day with the limited funds we have.
We put out an urgent appeal for help, but no one came forward..... Until Kim stepped in.
Last night, the family were rescued. They’re safe for now, tucked into her bathroom—but this is only temporary. We now face the challenge of somehow making space for them at our already overwhelmed sanctuary.
We cannot continue this work without support.
