Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. All systems are live. The issue is fully resolved. You can freely trade Bitcoin tokens at the speed of light on Odin Fun again. Quick post-mortem: The issue was extremely hard to identify. There are so many moving pieces at the protocol layer (or lower level smart contract code) that the answer isn't always straightforward. We worked with the Dfinity team (who was extraordinarily helpful) to finally identify the issue. Internet Computer smart contracts have two different kinds of memory. Heap memory (easy and fast to access but limited to 4 GBs) and stable memory (a little slower and more expensive to access and limited to hundreds of GBs). Rust has great StableBTree implementations so you can just go straight there. On the Motoko side the stable memory side is a little bit under-developed. And the issue was with the stable memory library we were using. We were using mo:map/Map as our stable memory setup, but we ended up having to migrate to mo:core/Map. The Mops map implementation has O(n) complexity during resize (aka during an update). Which initially isn't a problem. But once you get to 4M ledger entries (which is what we had) then you can no longer fit updates within the instruction limit. Essentially this means it takes too many instructions (too much computation) to do a single update because of the ledger size. So we had to migrate to mo:core/Map, which has O(log(n)) complexity on updates, which is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE better. So if you use Mops map and you want to grow beyond 4M ledger entries, then you should switch to mo:core/Map. If you are never going to reach 4M ledger entries you probably don't have to worry about it. We actually have a pretty slick upgrade path too if anyone is interested in learning more (ping me and I'll walk you through how we solved).
