High-rate GNSS station MIZU in central Honshu, Japan, recorded the M8.7 Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia earthquake, 2500 km from the epicenter. A peak motion of over 7 cm is seen in the east component. @IGSorg

Peak displacement of 20 cm recorded on @IGSorg GNSS station CUUT in Bangkok today from the devastating M7.7 earthquake near Mandalay, 1000 km from the source.

The M5.2 in Lamont, California this morning was recorded nicely on 5-Hz GNSS site WGPP, roughly 15 km SE of the epicenter. Shown are the velocity observations computed from time-differenced carrier phase observations. Peak ~ 15 cm/s @EarthScope_sci

In light of the news adding GNSS to @USGS_ShakeAlert, I wanted to reshare the following video of the expected performance of GFAST for the Tohoku earthquake. If a similar event occurred in Cascadia, this gives you a sense of the performance youtu.be/ZHZpUpTJRu8?si…

Today #ShakeAlert #EEW gets a boost! It's even more ready to take on the biggest quakes. It now includes Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) sensors that detect Earth-surface movement via satellite. GNSS includes the well-known US-based Global Positioning System (GPS).@USGS

Stunned & saddened to hear that Paul Wessel passed away on March 26. Only 64. Such monumental contributions to science. As a tribute to Paul, let’s see those GMT figs. (Not my best but one I can put my hands on right this second)

A very crude offset estimation for @IGSorg station TWTF for the M7.4 earthquake in Taiwan. Due to the timing of the event, only a few 30-s GNSS samples are available after the earthquake near the UTC day boundary. ~20 cm southward motion with ~10 cm subsidence
