When you hear the Hi-Lo, it’s time to go. Evacuate immediately.
In partnership with Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management, South Metro Fire Rescue is proud to announce that Douglas County is deploying Hi-Lo sirens as a dedicated evacuation notification tool during wildfires, natural disasters, and other major emergencies.
Residents that live in Arapahoe County or Jefferson County please continue to follow your county’s evacuation communication protocols.
This life-safety enhancement strengthens the County’s layered emergency alert system and provides critical redundancy when traditional communication methods may fail.
The Hi-Lo sirens are a dedicated evacuation tool for wildfires, natural disasters, and other major emergencies.
The Hi-Lo system, installed in patrol vehicles, emits a distinct alternating high-low tone followed by a recorded message: “A MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS AREA. PLEASE EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.”
This system will only be used when incident commanders have issued an Evacuation Order during extreme emergencies and adds a critical layer of redundancy when traditional alerts, such as cell phone notifications, may fail due to power outages, damaged cell towers, or heavy smoke.
Douglas County is also adopting standardized emergency terminology as part of a broader Front Range regional effort to improve clarity and consistency:
•Evacuation Order: Immediate threat to life. This is a lawful order to leave now. The area is lawfully closed to public access.
•Evacuation Warning: Potential threat to life and/or property. Those who require additional time to evacuate, and those with pets and livestock should leave now.
•Shelter in Place: Go indoors. Shut and lock doors and windows. Prepare to self-sustain until further notice and/or until contacted by emergency personnel for additional direction.
Hi-Lo sirens do not replace existing tools like Door Knocks, DougCoAlert or IPAWS alerts — they strengthen them. Residents are strongly encouraged to sign up for emergency notifications at dougcoalert.com to ensure they receive critical updates.

For the first time in history, at the Winter Olympics, both the United States men's and women's national ice hockey teams brought home gold in the same Games. This is an extraordinary achievement for our nation.
Colorado is proud to be a hub for hockey excellence, represented by Colorado @Avalanche forward Brock Nelson and Jaccob Slavin — a native of Erie and former defenseman at Colorado College for @TeamUSA.
Congratulations to Team USA on this historic milestone.

It’s icy out, which means now is not the time to test your Fast & Furious audition. Slow your roll, increase following distance, and give yourself extra time. @dcsheriff is on accident alert!

SMFR Prepares for High Winds, Critical Fire Weather Conditions
South Metro is once again preparing for another severe weather event today that will bring critical fire weather conditions in our district, the foothills and into the mountains.
Specifically, meteorological conditions with sustained winds greater than 50 MPH, gusts upwards of 80-105 MPH and low relative humidity, are expected to align over the foothills of Boulder and Jefferson Counties, creating a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION(PDS) for fire weather. No office in the state of Colorado has ever issued a PDS Red Flag Warning before, which is why South Metro is taking extra precautions.
In response to this, our teams have been very active with our county offices of emergency management. Below is an overview of our efforts to better support the response and readiness during this critical weather event:
•Regional Support: South Metro’s Emergency Manager Dan Stutz is actively liaising with all 3 counties and joining all emergency management briefings for the region.
•Activation of SMFR DOC and IST: South Metro has activated our DOC (Department Operations Center) and our IST (Incident Support Team) to ensure preparedness.
•Upstaffing and Supplies: We have upstaffed our apparatus and resources, as well as coordinated extra supplies as needed should an incident occur.
•Call Back Availability: Working with Wildland Team and BC’s for availability and to be prepared for a call back.

December 16, 2025 marks six years since the passing of Assistant Chief Troy Jackson from job related cancer.
As part of South Metro Fire Rescue’s unwavering commitment to cancer prevention and education, and to ensure the legacy of Chief Jackson and all those that we have lost in the line of duty lives on, a portion of I-25 between C-470 and Belleview Ave has been renamed the “Firefighters Memorial Highway In Memory of Chief Troy Jackson.”

This is the epitome of poor sportsmanship from Colorado State QB Darius Curry vs Boise State… Why are so many players spitting on eachother in college & pro football?
