Saint Nicholas was a Christian cleric who lived between AD 270 and 343.
He was born in Patara (near today’s Antalya, Türkiye).
He served as the bishop of Myra (modern Demre, Antalya).
He became known for his generosity, secretly giving gifts, and his love for children.
After his death, stories of miraculous events spread, and his fame expanded throughout Europe.
🎅 So where did the red-suited Santa come from?
Starting in the Middle Ages, European Christmas traditions merged with his story.
In the 19th century, Dutch immigrants brought the name “Sinterklaas” to America.
Over time, the English pronunciation turned into “Santa Claus.”
The modern image of Santa—jolly, round, in a red-and-white suit—became popular in the 1930s.
