True story. I know a millennial couple who we were casual friends with. They own a 1920’s house full of beautiful dark oak trim work - excellent condition. And she painted it white. I don’t speak with them anymore because of this (and other reasons). I know that sounds ridiculous but it’s indicative of other major mental issues. Disregard for the wood grain, the carpenter, the past generations that lived in the home and maintained the wood, the future generations that will live in the house once you’re gone. It’s a red line for me.

Few things Yankees should consider if they want a warm welcome moving to a rural county in the South: 1) We are really slow. We talk slow, walk slow, everything takes forever, and this has hurt us tremendously economically. Anything you do to speed us up will make you a valuable member of the community. 2) We coddle are women with words like ma'am, sweetheart, etc and always open doors. Very degrading to them. Definitely don't hold doors open and maybe hit em with a "hey you" or "Big'n" 3) We're poor and not well traveled at all but very curious. Please tell us lots about where you're from and how you did things there. Great opportunity for us to learn to do things better. 4) We pull over for funeral processions often wasting valuable minutes. Don't do this. Help make us more productive by moving us right along. 5) We dread serving in all forms of community leadership. Mayor, city council, school boards etc we don't like those positions and frankly we're terrible at them. You would do a much better job and the community would be greatful to have you take over those roles.
