Session II of the LXXII COSAC dealt with the state of the European Union in the year of institutional transition and the 15-year application of the Treaty of Lisbon. Deputy Minister of the Ministry of EU Affairs of Hungary @BarnaZsigmond underlined that instead of centralisation by European institutions the EU should return to the idea of the founding fathers. Union and national competences should be clearly defined and the institutions should respect these boundaries. The Chair of @EPInstitutional @svensimon added that regardless whether one agrees with every single proposal regarding Treaty changes, the debate on the future of the Union is much needed. He proposed to parliaments that they should guide the future steps on European integration. Chairman of the EU Policies Committee in the Italian Chamber of Deputies Alessandro Giglio Vigna pointed out that the decreasing number of directives and the increase in Commission delegated acts hampers the political control by national parliaments over EU decision making and eventually erodes democratic sovereignty in the EU. Commision Executive Vice-President @MarosSefcovic in his video message stressed the important role of national parliaments in EU decision making. He added that interparliamentary conferences serve as an important supplement to the subsidiarity control mechanism introduced by the Lisbon Treaty. @IPEXEU @HU24EU @parleu2024_hu

Today is a historic day as we proceed to actual, real negotiations with the European Union on Ukraine's membership. On February 28, 2022, just a few days after the full-scale invasion began, we signed the application for membership. Almost two years ago, in June 2022, we attained candidate status, and last December we secured a political decision on negotiations. But it is from today that the start of our membership in the European Union will be marked – the first intergovernmental conference between Ukraine and the EU is taking place today. I am grateful to everyone who defends Ukraine, our country and people. I am grateful to the team that is doing everything to make us part of the European Union. We will never be derailed from our path to a united Europe, to our common home of all European nations. A home that must be peaceful!
