On May 7, 2026, it was an honor to welcome U.S. Army Captain (Ret.) Leslie Nicole Smith to her brand new specially adapted smart home built by the Gary Sinise Foundation. I have known Leslie for over 20 years and watched her face incredible challenges during, and since her military service, including the loss of her leg due to a blood infection contracted while serving in Bosnia 2001-2002, and also much of her eyesight. She is legally blind. Yet she continues to live with remarkable strength, positivity, and a deep commitment to helping other veterans and their families. She is an inspiration to so many of us, and I’m grateful we could provide a home that will support her for years to come. Welcome home, Leslie.

Sergeant Christopher M. Bracks passed away on May 10, 2022. Christopher joined the Sheriff’s Department on April 12, 2006, and was assigned to Walnut Station at the time of his passing. Sergeant Bracks was participating in the Police Unity Tour and National Police Week Honor Detail when, at approximately 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time, he experienced a medical emergency. He was transported to a local hospital, where lifesaving efforts were made. Tragically, Sergeant Bracks did not survive. Christopher was also a proud veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps.

2026 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Police Unity Tour, made even more memorable by the largest number of LASD riders ever represented in the event. With less than 24 hours remaining before the start of the Police Unity Tour, riders continue to assemble their road bikes for the miles to come.  This ride is more than endurance. It represents discipline, commitment, and honoring the memory of law enforcement officers that have passed in the line of duty. With every mile and every pedal stroke, our LASD riders will push themselves physically and mentally, driven by a mission to honor.

Every year, during the first full week of May, law enforcement organizations across the country celebrate National Correctional Officers and Employees week which began back in 1984 thanks to President Ronald Reagan.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department would like to formally recognize the dedication and service of our Correctional Officers and Employees as the week comes to an end. Correctional Officers, also known as Custody Assistants within LASD, play an integral role in maintaining safety, security, and order within our custody facilities, station jails, and detention areas. Their hard work and dedication, in what is often a demanding and high stress environment, often go unnoticed due to operating behind the scenes. Not only do correctional professionals ensure security, but they are also indispensable in supporting the rehabilitation, accountability, and well-being of those who are within their care.  Without their help, law enforcement operations around the nation would cease to function. This observance provides an opportunity to acknowledge the important contributions of all those who hold the title of Correctional Officers and Employees alike.
