Hello - we have been digging a linear feature at Caer Alyn that runs along the western edge of the field immediately north of Bryn Alyn hillfort. Looking interesting - no exciting finds though! Photo by A. Rogers.

We are back to digging and have opened up a new trench to look at the relationship between a resistivity survey which indicated banks and ditches and the possible site of Wat's Dyke (unscheduled section). 😀

As senior management teams across the country slash and burn their institutions, cutting excellent staff and departments without a thought, Chester’s VC gives us a snapshot of the perks and paybacks those same managers have come to expect. THREAD 1/7

Note on this by @NWales_FLO forthcoming in the next journal of @ChesterArchSoc, also on the nearby villa by @_pudders and Steve Grenter of @wrexhammuseums.

Not ashamed to admit that one of the highlights of the British Museum's #Nero exhibition was the recently discovered lead pig from #Wrexham (top) with first known inscription to Marcus Trebellius Maximus, governor of Britannia 63-69 🤓 #RomanBritain #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology

What’s happening with redundancies at Chester, and what can you do to help? Yesterday senior management confirmed they still plan to issue redundancy notices at end of July to the small pool of staff still at risk. This is cruel and unnecessary. THREAD 1/6

We keep finding Iron Age pottery! Over 10kg of salt containing vessel called VC, making this one of the largest assemblages in Britain. #ironagepottery

It looks like I’ve lost my supervisor as he was fired for not delivering on a manuscript. I’m distraught for him. I went to Exeter because of him. Don’t know if I will continue my PhD

This feature in the Chapel graveyard originally looked like a metalled surface. Now it looks like a wall. The only diagnostic artefact recovered so far comprises a fragment of decorated column. What do you think?

Heritage & Archaeology staff have indeed received notification this pm that our 'at risk' status has been revoked (with as little rationale as it was instituted). We fight on in support of colleagues at risk: SOLIDARITY! THANK YOU to all who have supported us! @ChesterUcu
UCU Chester@ChesterUcu

IT’S WORKING! Colleagues in history and archaeology have just been informed they are no longer at risk of redundancy. This is down to UCU plus an incredible and well supported campaign by @ArchaeologyChe1 and @VoicesChester Let’s keep fighting, we CAN save every job!

The base of the D enclosure ditch has been dated to the late 1st century BC/AD. We are still finding a lot of large animal bones. I wonder what species they are?

The rot down of the Caer Alyn number 2 roundhouse continues. People are no longer allowed inside. As you can see brambles are now creeping up the roof. The top of the the roof has now disappeared allowing rain inside, so rod has started inside now.

Our Saturday volunteers made a great discovery whilst excavating the metalled surface which formed a pathway through the graveyard. The image shows partial base of a decorated column from the later medieval chapel.

Been packing up a selection of ‘Stonehengiana’ to send out to the #Stonehenge exhibition at Herne in Germany that I’m helping to curate. I love the fact that the Great Trilithon even has its own specific souvenir. And I’ve got the matching shoehorn and toasting fork as well!

Obviously the decision we received today was not the one we wanted, so the fight will go on! The university still needs council and senate approval so please continue emailing and sharing our petition around! #SaveSheffieldArchaeology

We are very sad to say that our Higher Cert, BSc and BSc (Hons) in Applied Archaeology courses at IT Sligo have been cut. We have been informed that our archaeology degree programme at IT Sligo is no longer sustainable. See images for a full statement from our Archaeology Staff
