Who else thinks that family dinners at the table are still important?

I’ve always appreciated the art that accompanies @Plough articles. They really enrich the piece as thoughtful companions. Here’s a wonderful spread featuring work by Carlijn Kingma in “The Critique of Religion” article by @kingholeung

There’s something magical about Galahad and the Grail by @malcolmguite and @stephencrotts Not just the story, but the object itself. There’s care in every detail. It’s a beautiful reminder that craftsmanship still matters.

Galahad and the Grail, the new book by @malcolmguite, is a revelation. In every line you can feel his urgency to recover lost modes of being: poetry, chivalry, the great myths & legends, the natural world. He seeks to revive King Arthur for a world in danger of forgetting him.

These are both very strong texts. The Philosophy of Tolkien is great if you have not studied much philosophy OR if you just want to get even more pumped about how good Tolkien is The Flame Imperishable is a great guide toward a deeper philosophical approach to Tolkien.

Very excited to lead a call tonight brainstorming an issue of @Plough on the theme of Beauty. What and who would you like to read in that issue?

what no one tells you is that you don’t have to abandon your joys and enthusiasms as you get older, you can simply burrow down into them, growing ever more niche and strange, like a swallow in her nest of grass.

"When the sailor is out on the ocean, when everything is changing all around him, when the waves are born and die, he does not stare down into the waves, because they are changing. He looks up at the stars. Why? Because they are faithful; they have the same location now that they had for our ancestors and will have for generations to come. By what means does he conquer the changeable? By the eternal. By the eternal, one can conquer the future, because the eternal is the ground of the future, and therefore through it the future can be fathomed.” - Kierkegaard, The Expectancy of Faith

I’m having so much fun teaching Beowulf. At the beginning of each class, I throw a mead hall music and ambience video on the screen while a student, with gusto, recaps the story so far.

@joynessthebrave Agree with you on Pugh’s character, but Blunts character was much more than just an affair. Her role in the interrogation room was particularly impactful.

Oppenheimer’s portrayal of women is comically bad. The only women named have affairs with Oppenheimer, none of which advance the plot. Florence Pugh doesn’t need to be naked. I would have preferred no women to the sexualised objectification we got. What a waste of Pugh and Blunt!

He’s discussing several things I’m not familiar with, so I can’t give a critical review at this point, but this book is fascinating, to say the least. I think there’s a lot of good here.
