We welcome this bold action by the Chancellor to scrap the two-child limit. By the end of this Parliament, 450,000 children across the country will have been lifted out of poverty. Scrapping this unjust policy is the single most powerful step to reduce child poverty in a generation.  Every child deserves a childhood free of poverty. For too long, children have been penalised by this pernicious policy, through no fault of their own. This announcement sends a clear signal that all our children's lives are valued regardless of the circumstances of their birth and that the UK Government is committed to giving every child the best start in life. This is a moment of hope for hard up families.    We look forward to working with the UK Government to build on this announcement and the forthcoming child poverty strategy to tackle systemic issues that hold too many families back.

Our response to Reform’s proposal to cap the overseas aid budget at £1bn 👇 “Slashing the budget for international aid and co-operation won’t just turn our backs on children and partners around the world, it will undermine our national interest. COVID19 was a stark demonstration that no-one is safe until everyone is. And the UK’s security and economy depend on global stability. Conflict, poverty, and climate disasters drive displacement, fuel instability, and ultimately threaten our safety at home. Our recent polling with More in Common shows that more than 60% of people think the UK should either be a leader or play a large role in international affairs. The public know that you don’t create prosperity by pretending global issues don’t exist. Britain is a member of the global community and playing its part will help to ensure better futures for children in the UK and around the world.” - George Graham, Executive Director of Global Impact at Save the Children UK

‘Their only job is to protect the ludicrous system at which they sit at the top.' The removal of Prince Andrew’s titles has James O’Brien thinking about the ‘confected’ nature of the Royal Family.

Well worth a read. Some great minds using this moment of aid cuts to consider 'what next?' Lots in here for the sector to unpick and debate as we seek to chart a new path forward which sees investment return, and impact delivered.
The Fabian Society@thefabians

The UK has a proud record on overseas aid. But in recent years we've seen cuts in the development budget, and a fracturing on the political consensus around aid. In 'Promising Development', we explore the future of aid in an uncertain world.

Unsurprising for anyone who's went to a football match last season, yet still sad to see the sheer scale. Huge increase in reported sexism and misogyny, rising transphobic abuse, and a five-fold increase in reported anti-Catholic sectarian abuse. More must be done to stop it.

Continuing to draw costs of hosting refugees and asylum seekers from the aid budget denies support to millions of children across the world. The Chancellor committed to bringing these costs down. While it’s vital the UK continues to support those seeking safety here, the government must ensure these savings from the aid budget now go towards boosting life-saving investments in children overseas. #AidCuts #SpendingReview

🚨 NEW: 80% of @Keir_Starmer's Cabinet represent constituencies with higher than average child poverty rates, new analysis from @lborouniversity for the @EndChildPoverty Coalition has found. The report also found an “extremely high correlation” between the two-child limit to Universal Credit policy and the proportion of children in poverty in each constituency. Child poverty in the UK has reached a devastating new high of 4.5 million. Without urgent action, this will be the first Labour government to preside over a significant rise in child poverty — a record no one should want. The time for action is now, and the Comprehensive Spending Review, and forthcoming child poverty strategy should involve bold action, including scrapping the two-child limit and benefit cap to help the lowest income families. Write to your MP to demand that they stand against rising child poverty: bit.ly/4k6PNhT
