Last week, when i stepped down from the car at Ojukwu girls’ hostels in University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, something terrible hit me before i even saw anything else. The smell. Not the kind you can ignore. The kind that stays with you. The kind that makes you wonder how anyone is expected to live like this not to talk of study, dream, or become anything. Bathrooms you can’t step into without holding your breath. Water that doesn’t run. Windows open for "Window Men" to steal at night. Doors that don’t lock. Rooms packed beyond capacity. No privacy. No dignity. Just young girls trying to survive each day in a place that quietly strips them of self-worth. And that’s where the conversation everyone avoids begins. Because what happens next is not random. When a teenage girl cannot bathe safely… When she cannot sleep in peace… When her own hostel feels like a punishment… She starts looking for an escape. Not because she’s wayward. Not because she lacks home training. But because she’s tired. Tired of managing filth. Tired of feeling less than human. So a man offers a better space, a cleaner room, water, light, comfort. And slowly, survival turns into compromise. It doesn’t start with “promiscuity.” It starts with relief. Then comes dependency. Then comes pressure. Then comes mistakes that carry lifelong consequences. And one day, she’s pregnant. And society, in its usual cruelty, asks: “Where are her parents?” “Why are girls like this?” But nobody asks the harder question: What kind of environment did we abandon her to? We keep pretending morality exists in isolation. It doesn’t. Environment shapes choices. And when you place teenagers in conditions that constantly strip them of dignity, you shouldn’t be shocked when they begin to make desperate decisions just to feel human again. This is not just about dirty hostels. This is about how a system quietly pushes young girls into situations they never planned for and then turns around to blame them for surviving it. If we’re serious about reducing teenage pregnancy… If we truly care about protecting the future of these girls… Then we need to stop looking away. Because sometimes, the difference between discipline and desperation is just the condition of where a girl lays her head at night.

President Tinubu Approves New Police Academy Campus in Ogun State, Releases N15 Billion Take-Off Grant President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. In a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President also approved a special take-off grant of N15 billion for the new campus. The approval is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the main academy in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country. The N15 billion intervention fund will be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) 2026 allocation. It is earmarked for the development of priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets. The siting of the new campus in Erinja followed the recommendation of a high-level consultative meeting that included the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The meeting took into account student intake capacity, available funding, academic quality assurance, and the growing manpower needs of the Nigerian Police Force, which is currently intensifying recruitment.

Men stop tolerating nonsense in the name of marriage or relationship. If your wife or girlfriend doesn’t respect you, dump her immediately and get someone who respects you. Your respect as a man is non negotiable.

Let’s appreciate these three gallant soldiers who stood firm and refused to receive a call by the DSS, even though they were at the forefront of sensitizing Nigerians for the protest. Meanwhile, a man who never uttered a word about the protest was the one called😂 Nigerians, let’s be wise.

Dear Mr. @PeterObi , I have one question for you sir; why did you leave the Labour Party (LP)? I won’t ask why you left APGA and PDP. Serious politicians bleed for their parties. They don’t run to another party each time they lost an election. This is the secret of the people that built APC. Love APC or hate it, it did not emerge overnight as a dominant party. It was built through years of coalition, sacrifice, internal negotiation, and grassroots commitment. Many individuals invested in it long before it became electorally rewarding. Some remain without appointments to this day, yet they continue to contribute to its structure and growth. Mr. Peter, your behavior worries me and only further strengthen my assumption that you are not ready to build a new Nigeria, you are only interested in what to gain from it.

In another stunning development, South Korean leader agreed to meet with North Korean leader Kin Jon Un at the border of the two countries, for the first time. South Korea too can no longer wait for the United States security guarantees. Remember, some of their weapons, especially the interceptors, were taken away by the U.S. during the war with Iran and handed over for Israel protection. South and North Korean unification will undo the United States’ artificially created 38th parallel borderlines, destroy their ADIZ (Air defense identification zone) and effectively handover the peninsula to China. Donald Trump has truly delivered on his promise to Xi Jinping on this front. Tripolar world order getting set. Next is Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine will soon become part of Russia and Zelensky should better be parking his bags.

I earned my OND & HND many years ago, and recently someone tried to make light/joke of my accomplishment. I had to explain to them why technical and practical knowledge is as vital as formal education. I also thanked God that today, universities now allow HND holders to upgrade to a BSc in just three semesters, a practical solution that recognizes our effort and skill without forcing us to start from scratch. In Nigeria, HND holders have long faced quiet but damaging discrimination. You dedicate years to polytechnic education, gain hands-on experience, complete industrial training, and often outperform graduates from universities, yet you are still regarded as less than. This is not a story from the past. In 2026, it continues across ministries, banks, oil companies, hospitals, and private firms from Lagos to Abuja and beyond. Even universities, which should recognize polytechnic graduates, often reinforce the divide. Promotions stall, salaries start lower, and job postings frequently read BSc preferred. I have personally witnessed HND engineers managing projects worth billions, only to see fresh BSc graduates rise faster. I know a brilliant HND computer scientist in Lagos who developed a fintech platform but was blocked from a leadership role because the HR policy demanded a first degree. Another HND nurse, with over a decade of experience, was told she could not become Chief Nursing Officer without a BSc. These examples are far from rare. They reflect the daily hurdles faced by thousands of hardworking HND holders. The paradox is stark. Polytechnics exist to equip professionals with practical, industry-ready skills, yet society often devalues what they produce. Employers cling to outdated notions of university superiority, wasting talent, fostering frustration, and prompting many skilled individuals to either settle for less or leave the country. Even Universities of Technology, whose curricula align closely with polytechnics, are not immune to this bias. Thankfully, there is a solution. Nigerian universities now offer accelerated HND to BSc Conversion Programmes. And the best part? You can complete it in just three semesters. This is designed for working professionals. There is no need to abandon your career or family commitments. The programme bridges the gap between practical polytechnic education and theoretical university knowledge, focusing only on advanced courses, projects, and dissertation work required for the BSc. Universities such as Imo State University, Lagos State University, Bells University of Technology, Uni Uyo, Dominican University, Southwestern University, and Kwara State University now run these programmes, with flexible schedules including weekends and online classes. The advantages are clear. The cost is far lower than starting a full degree. You enter with your HND and a few O’Level credits. Upon completion, your BSc is recognized fully, with no qualifiers, no extra explanations, and no barriers at job interviews or promotion boards. To every HND holder, do not wait for the system to change on its own. Three semesters is a small price for years of opportunity lost. Imagine walking into your next appraisal or job application with a BSc in hand, ready to claim your rightful place. This is not just about a degree. It is about reclaiming your dignity, proving your capability, and refusing to let outdated labels define your future. The choice is yours. Step into the programme, earn your BSc, and show the world that your skills and education are equal to any challenge. Do not let the past determine your path. Take charge of your career and redefine what it means to be an HND holder in Nigeria today. Prof. Sandra Duru
