Attending the Colibri Ferry Conference reminds me why I’m passionate about transforming ferries in BC. Inspiring to see similar plans for passenger-only ferry service are already happening in the U.S. Great ferry service is driven by the communities they serves.

Sic transit gloria mundi! Black smoke used to be a sign of progress; the sails belonged to the 19th c. Now it is the sails that are regarded as progressive; the black smoke belongs to 20th c. “Seascape from the Danish Coast”, Ioannis Altamouras (1852-1878)

Over the past 25 years, as new passenger-only ferry services have come online in Puget Sound, the Washington State Ferry system has steadily carried fewer and fewer commuters. Car ferries for the cars, people ferries for the people. It just makes sense.

No BC bingo card is complete without a ride along with Uchuck III, offering daily freight service through historic Nootka Sound. Epic send off from the dock. ⁦⁦Thanks @GetWestAdv

As the practicalities of renewing Washington State Ferries' car ferry fleet sink in, a coastal transportation network supplemented by passenger-only ferries is a natural choice. Nice articulation of that idea found here. kitsapsun.com/story/opinion/… via @kitsapsun

Car ferries & passenger-only ferries each have their own distinct strengths and weaknesses. Resilient transportation means having options. We don't need one or the other. We need both!
