The primary idea with the Arsenal corners is to deliver the ball right on top of the 6-yard box. Due to the proximity to the goal, any touch will lead to a threatening situation. Traditionally, the issue with this approach was that the goalkeeper would simply come out and clear it, due to how close to the goal the delivery was. Arsenal solved this by putting so many bodies around the keeper, using heavy blocking and making him a sitting duck. Logically, the only solution to defend that is to reduce the bodies so that the keeper can be aggressive in getting to the ball. Maresca had the right idea. If you put 3–4 attackers on the halfway line, no coach will leave them free, as it would be far too big of a risk. This reduces the bodies in the box, allows the goalkeeper to be more assertive, and makes the whole set piece a lot less threatening. Another significant advantage is that you have your wingers and 10, who are usually the worst box defenders and the most prone to mistakes, away from the chaos.
