In other words, ignoring the genuine nature of the amendments put forward in the chamber to politically point score at the expense of service men & women. The Freedom of the City is an honour granted to individuals by convention, not organisations.

Beyond Hansard doing a double take to work out who was speaking (it is a rare occurrence), the member for Glasgow North East fails to mention GCC voting in favour of showing respect to the Regiment & choosing to honour them in a more appropriate way.
Maureen Burke 🌹@MaureenBurkeMP

Over 20 local councils across Scotland have honoured @The_SCOTS with the Freedom of their area to mark the Regiment's 20th anniversary - but SNP & Green Councillors refused to do so in Glasgow. It is not too late: Glasgow City Council should reconsider its decision.

@fraserihudghton I would agree that those actions have no place in a democratic society. If someone expresses views you disagree with either debate or walk away. However, I don’t see this happening just because someone votes Reform beyond the same eye roll a workplace Brexit chat may receive.

@camerontasker I pretty much agree Cameron. However, for years now it’s gone beyond just ‘unpopular’. Activist types regularly complain to people’s workplaces or unis in a bid not just to express their disagreement, but to silence them completely and ruin their lives. That is plainly wrong.

One consequence of shutting Reform out of the most basic political talks is ordinary Scots who voted for them in a free and democratic election will find life more precarious at work or university if they open up about it - effectively blacklisting them. All party leaders would do well to remember that freedom of speech, belief and expression are enshrined in human rights law. Employers take their lead from the top, and too often get it wrong. This does not help.
Colin Mackay@STVColin

FM says he will invite all party leaders except Reform in to St Andrews House for talks about post election priorities. On cost of living, he will deal with supermarket price cap and £2 bis fare in first 100 days. He says UK Govt must engage on the constitution.

@JohnRentoul Elections provide mandates based on seats, referenda provide them based on votes. Requesting a 2nd independence referendum is within the power of the Scottish Govt under s.30 of the Scotland Act. Therefore, the election result gives John Swinney a mandate to request a referendum.

Given that independence requires a majority of votes, this election is no mandate for another referendum Pro-ind parties (SNP, Green) 40% and 42% (constits and list) Unionist parties (Lab, Reform, Con, LibDem) 58% and 54% #Results" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Scot…

@JHenryCDF It’s a fantastic victory for Plaid but I fear their parliamentary strength could be weakened by having to rely on Labour, Tory or Reform votes to get policies across the line. Despite also falling short of a majority, the SNP still outnumber these 3 parties combined.

Pleasure to speak this afternoon with the leadership of Plaid Cymru & Sinn Fein - @RhunapIorwerth, @MoNeillSF and @MaryLouMcdonald. The direction of travel and demand for independence is clear, and Westminster should grasp the significance of this moment.

According to census data around 4% of the population identify as LGB. Under 2% exclusively as LG with <1% identifying as Lesbian. Proportionately, this equates to around 2 seats in Holyrood. Without prying into MSP’s private lives, at least 2 openly lesbian women were elected.
Joanna Cherry KC@joannaccherry

I’ll no doubt be corrected if I’m wrong but I don’t think any lesbians have been elected to the Scottish parliament this time. ‘Diversity in power' is not achieved by men claiming to be women or by the imposition of belief systems. heraldscotland.com/news/26091873.…

Scottish Labour framing it as Westminster fault for their rather poor performance is ever so slightly ironic.

Unionists need to abandon using the majority as a metric of electoral success in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿’s system designed to prevent majorities. The SNP has been in power for nearly 20 years & still winning elections with more seats than any other party has ever held in the history of devolution.
JOHN NICOLSON 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺@MrJohnNicolson

In this record breaking fifth consecutive victory @theSNP has just won 80% of Scotland’s constituencies. No party has ever won 80% of the seats in the House of Commons. Labour's record was 64% under Blair. The Tory record was 61% under Thatcher. Extraordinary result.

Tonight, the people of Scotland have emphatically renewed their trust in the SNP. However you voted, I will be the First Minister for all of Scotland, and work every day to build a better future.

Yesterday, the SNP under John Swinney’s leadership won 58 seats after nearly 20 years in Government. In 1999, Scottish Labour under Donald Dewar won 56, and the party’s vote share and share of seats has been declining ever since.
