Funny how everyone supports more training opportunities for deaf people but as soon as a deaf-only initiative is proposed, suddenly everyone is concerned about "inclusion", "equality" and "learning from each other"🧵(1)

🚨 Today in Turkey, Instagram has been banned. As the Mayor of Istanbul, I strongly believe that communication bans do not benefit any society. Limiting access to social media platforms stifles free expression and hinders the flow of information. I urge the authorities to reconsider this decision and lift the ban. Let's work together for a more open and connected society.

How are the numerical skills of deaf students when they entered to school? No different than children without language deprivation. Most interestingly, certain tasks show language modality-specific differences. Read more (with an English summary): 👇 doi.org/10.1024/2235-0…

What I took away from today's "future of the sign language interpreting industry" webinar @humanisti : AI/automated translation not mentioned as a future challenge or threat for the sign language interpreting profession. Are the other challenges just more pressing? (1/3)

Tonight, #Istanbul has spoken clearly: our collective desire for #democracy shines brighter than ever, marking a pivotal step towards #unity and the end of polarization. At a time when the world witnesses a retreat from democratic values, our city stands as a beacon of hope and #change. #tamyolileri

/sic.

Our review of 101 sign language AI papers reveals systemic biases in the current state of the research and misalignment with broader deaf languaging patterns. Some of these biases are now baked-in as standards. Time for Deaf-led research to shape the future of sign language AI.
Alex Lu@alexijielu

Sign language AI is dominated by hearing, non-signing researchers. What kinds of systemic biases does this introduce in the field's collective direction? To find out, read our preprint, with @aashaka_desai @mdemeulder @jahochcam and Annemarie Kocab! arxiv.org/abs/2403.02563

Sign Language Studies has published a set of memoirs by some of the pioneers of sign language linguistics. I particularly recommend the article by 4 of the first deaf linguists (Supalla, Padden, Bahan, and Wallin) in a field dominated by hearing people. muse.jhu.edu/issue/52076
