Some news: today is my last day with the New York Times. I've loved my time here (& my editors & colleagues!). But I am VERY excited for my next adventure: TV writing. Next week I start my first TV staff writing job! More details TK (guess I'll never not use journalism lingo?).

@JustineBateman Meghan grew up in LA. It's her hometown. Plus their presence brings worldwide attention to the disaster relief efforts here (like it or not, we're talkin' about it!).

1/ Here’s a story about how journalism works. Spoiler Alert: This is how we decide *not* to publish. We were recently looking at Pete Hegesth’s different statements over the years about West Point, where he has said he was admitted. First stop: West Point.
Pete Hegseth@PeteHegseth

We understand that ProPublica (the Left Wing hack group) is planning to publish a knowingly false report that I was not accepted to West Point in 1999. Here’s my letter of acceptance signed by West Point Superintendent, Lieutenant General Daniel Christman, US Army.

This is such a smart story about the housing crisis and why nearly every city in America is now facing it. Written by @ConorDougherty (reporting from Kalamazoo -- and hours upon hours of phone calls from our own house). nytimes.com/2024/08/22/bus…

Evan was subjected to a closed trial by a shadowy judicial system where acquittals are almost unheard of. No media or US diplomats were allowed in the courtroom and no public evidence was presented. It wrapped up within a month. More on that shadowy system wsj.com/world/russia/e…

@candacejackson No you're right, there are some good ones! They're just rarer, I think. Places like Smitten Kitchen and Milk Street always have such reliably good ideas. (Thankfully for simple recipes because yes, who has the time!)

@moorehn Oooh disagree we’ve found some favorites there! (Ya gotta look at the ones with great reviews.) Tho perhaps it’s not the place for fancy elaborate dishes (can’t speak to that because I don’t attempt…lol)

I've said this before but it's worth repeating: NYT Cooking is the worst possible place you can get recipes. Their recipes are frequently imbalanced and fail utterly in flavor. Use Bon Appétit, use Ina Garten, use Martha Stewart, use Cook's Illustrated and America's Test Kitchen and Milk Street. Or use individual chefs like Molly Baz.

Cathy took a chance on me as a young reporter with little experience but lots of big ideas and potential. Her zero bullshit style was inspiring and intimidating. She was one of a kind — tho I am one of many, many journalists who lives she changed for the better. What a loss 💔
