My mother-in-law passed away on a Friday. Quiet, no fuss, exactly how she lived. We weren't close for the first decade of my marriage, I'll be honest about that. She thought I wasn't good enough for her son and I thought she was cold. Took us years to figure out we were both just terrified of losing him to the other one. After the funeral I was the one who volunteered to clean out her craft room. Nobody else wanted to do it, too painful, and I thought I could handle it because I was the tough one. I was wrong. Found bins and bins of lacework, things I'd never seen her make. Doilies, table runners, shawls folded in tissue paper. And tucked behind a shelf, this parasol. White lace, every leaf and petal perfect, the kind of work that takes months and months of patience. There was a little tag pinned to the handle in her tiny handwriting. It said "For Margot's wedding. Just in case." Margot is my daughter. She's nine. This woman had started making a wedding parasol for a little girl who still loses her shoes every morning. I sat on that craft room floor and sobbed harder than I did at the service. All those years I thought she was distant, she was sitting in this room making something beautiful for a day she wasn't even sure she'd live to see. I brought the parasol home and posted it in a lace group on the Tedooo app because I needed someone to tell me what stitch this was, how long it would have taken her. The responses broke me open. Women saying this was hundreds of hours of work, that the pattern was freehand, not copied from anything. One woman who sells handmade lace accessories through her shop on Tedooo messaged me privately and said she'd only seen work like this once before, from her own grandmother in Portugal. She told me to guard it with my life. It sits in my closet now, wrapped in the same tissue paper. Margot doesn't know about it yet. But one day, when she's grown and standing in a white dress, I'll hand it to her and say "Your grandmother made this before you even lost your first tooth. That's how sure she was you'd become something worth celebrating.

When you're a small business, you rely on the postal service to do their job properly. One of my customers received this damaged calendar today from @RoyalMail 😒 The cardboard envelope looks like it's been used as a rugby ball, despite a 'do not bend' sticker.. 🙄 It had been ripped open and 'repaired' with cellotape.. The calendar hanging hook was missing. I aways ship my orders in perfect condition. I replaced this calendar at my own cost...
