Is the thought that they’re not close to having a nuke so we shouldn’t worry or that having a nuke is wholesale not something we should sorry about. Closing the strait is not the only way for them to project power. They don’t need to use a nuke for it to strengthen their position and leverage in the region. The great delusion is that we’re still in the Pax Americana and not jockeying for position in a new global order. I, for one, want the US and west to have the strongest position possible and for China and their allies to have the weakest one possible.

@capriciouscaper @durhamoldtown @AaronBastani Iran have had control of the Strait of Hormuz this whole time. On what plane of logic do you operate on where you think they’re crazy enough to deploy a nuclear weapon (outside of retaliation) but haven’t been crazy enough to block the Strait until now? It’s utterly incoherent.

It does increasingly feel like large numbers of people in US, Europe and Israel just presumed Iran would roll over because they are a brown Muslim country. A domestic industrial base? No way. Can’t be overstated how much people’s biases were shaped by how stupid this man was.

Yes the war has been started by the US/israel and for good reason. Your ilk think anything that benefits the Israelis is inherently detrimental to the West without considering our interests can be aligned. It is an indisputable fact Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons- why would the entire western world broker an antinuclear treaty with major concessions if that weren’t the case? Again - nukes matter and change the balance of power regionally and globally with real, tangible effects. No Arab state has a nuclear weapon. if one nation in the region that is hostile to the west has a nuke and controls global shipping lanes of 20% of the worlds oil what kind of leverage do you think that grants them? What affects might that have on the Western world? Your concerns about recession and global food crises are real, but if Iran is the dominant power in those region those concerns are amplified, but the US/West’s ability to resolve the and dictate their terms are greatly diminished. We are diminishing a major rival power with very little loss other than temporarily Increased oil prices. That may change, but for now I see no reason for apoplectic concern.

@capriciouscaper @durhamoldtown @AaronBastani This war has been started not by the Iranians but by the Americans and Israelis. If it isn’t finished soon then people in poorer countries will starve. Western economies will get smashed and the human cost of a recession will hit. But tell me more about your imaginary threat.

Now, nothing. If we could’ve reasonably prevented it in the 90s, it would have strengthened the West geopolitical position today. I’m sure it’s all fine though WWII was the last global conflict we’ll ever have. Allowing our adversaries and their allies to create a network of nuclear armed militaries will have no negative effects on our position in a (not-at-all impending) global conflict. I’m sure it’s also a non-factor for China whether their allies have nukes.

@D__Melb @durhamoldtown @AaronBastani Right, nukes are totally inconsequential and only serve as a deterrent to military conflict. While we’re at it we should just send some to Cuba and Venezuela as well. Would prevent silly US intervention and make everyone in NA safer

@capriciouscaper @durhamoldtown @AaronBastani The consequence of Iran obtaining nukes is that we wouldn’t be drawn into fucking idiotic conflicts like this one. As such, I’m entirely ambivalent on them obtaining nukes, especially given they have other methods of harming us that aren’t mutually assured destruction.

@D__Melb @durhamoldtown @AaronBastani Do you think North Korea having nukes is a reason we’re not able to confront them as easily? What do you think the consequences would be if Iran were to obtain nukes?

@durhamoldtown @AaronBastani North Korea has an evil regime and nukes. Yet they’re not a bigger threat to Western countries than this war and upcoming energy crisis will be. The spineless cowards are pathetic cunts like you who are cucks for the Americans.

Again a great point that contradicts your position. The reason we can’t (and couldn’t) easily confront Pakistan is because they have nukes and tha changes the game theory. Iran is a hostile nation propping up our geopolitical enemies. If they had nukes it would upend the regional order and we can Europe’s position further in the Indo European region. Iran is allied with Russia and China. Why would we allow them to have the ability to project force and box us in between the northeast (Russia) and southeast (Iran)

@durhamoldtown @AaronBastani So the UK has to "confront" every country that has missiles that can reach them? You gonna confront Pakistan over their nukes, then?

@MJ4804048521795 @justMizuyuki Fair but if the study says 52% and I’ve literally never heard a fellow dude in my life have this stance I think something’s off. I’ve had many conversations that are literally just rattling off nostalgic or very hot pornstars lol. Granted I’m 23 but still 52% is nuts.

@nxd1979 This isn’t what people are dissapointed about. They reduced the generational qualifications, you need to have a parent or grandparent (previously great great grandparent) . Also this was almost certainly done to limit South American immolation from Brazil et al. not Americans.

@ClickingSeason @0x49fa98 Agree the frame that “you will mess your kids up no matter what” is bad. Failing to understand that maturing and learning to live in society is inherently painful/difficult and trying to prevent your child from experiencing any discomfort/pain is also bad.

@supremeMilo @kristenmag There is basically nowhere in the country you could retire at 35/40 with a 750k net worth. That is basically 17.5k/year to live on if you were to live until 75.

They compound their wealth because they are building profitable companies that are engines of value creation. If the government taxes their wealth, it means they have to sell their ownership stake in their business to pay it. The companies become less valuable and have less access to capital which makes it harder to grow the businesses this would be a domino effect that would make everyone poorer and crash, everyone’s retirement accounts, including teachers firefighters and every private citizen with a 401(k)

this is what I mean when I say all of the stupid populist talking points have rotted our ability to talk about taxes and how to reasonably apply them I honestly think 50% of Twitter thinks we could fund basically every program in the US if we just had like a 50% wealth tax on the top 1000 billionaires or something.
Katie Porter@katieporterca

0% state income tax for California families making under $100,000. That’s thousands of dollars back in your pocket where it belongs. As Governor, I’ll work the issue at both ends—lowering taxes for those who are struggling and raising them on the biggest corporations that can afford to pay.

@ParadoxicalJoel @TheOmniLiberal @grok using the above figures - starting at $10 trillion on global wealth, if we taxed 50% of it year one and then 5% each year after that how much wealth would be left and how much tax revenue would the government be collecting in the 10th year?

@capriciouscaper @TheOmniLiberal They could drop it down to an annual 5% wealth tax and fund the government regularly. The things that have put us in debt consistently been starting wars and tax cuts for the rich. Ending those and focusing on social programs like health care, SS, etc would benefit everyone.
