Publishing for the sake of publishing makes you a noise generator. How does it work? Quite simply: - The deeper your studies, the more each study takes, and the less you publish. This makes your research more interesting and easier to follow. - However, boring research pushes experts AWAY. If you publish a lot of shallow studies, experts won’t see much value in them. - With a lot of papers, you may feel like you’re getting a larger audience. BUT in reality, the quality of this audience drops. Experts will find better scientists to follow. Essentially - being a strong scientist means publishing high-quality research that experts happily follow. 📍In social media, one can notice a similar effect: Posting just because you “have to post something once a day” makes you a noise generator. Yes, more posts expose you to a wider audience. BUT this “noise” makes high-level professionals to unfollow you. They don’t have time for low-quality posts. As a result, the quality of your audience drops. Reclaiming the attention of professionals is much harder than being careful with what you post/publish. ❗Don't publish for the sake of publishing. Only publish to move science forward. Quality over quantity. Even if everyone pushes you into the opposite direction.

PhD students are not there to do a defined piece of research for their supervisor(s) They are there to do their own research, which they design themselves (with guidance) If PIs want a specified piece of work done, hire someone to do it

Hilo 🧵

The amount of (suspected) AI-generated manuscripts and published papers is sharply rising. Why are journals not doing a better job screening for these? This generates an enormous burden for peer reviewers and pollutes the scientific literature. We need better tools and rules.

Basically: There is science AND there is academia. Academia has become “enterprise-centered” and metrics-oriented. It has advantages. But it’s fiercely competitive. Science requires perseverance and time. It’s about discoveries. Entrepreneurship and $$$ is only a byproduct.
