Fact about American fertility almost nobody will say out loud: The ONLY group of women with above-replacement fertility is women NOT in formal employment. To have 2+ kids, most women take a break from work. Currently no way around this. New piece ⬇️ ifstudies.org/blog/low-girlb…

PSA, if you have porcelain that has those grey scratches you can get them off with bar keepers friend because they're actually small bits of metal added to the top of the dish rather than scratched away from it

My chapter in this is basically a deep dive into a sub-phenomenon within my dependence of the girlboss essay: the disproportionate subsidies going to female-dominated majors and universities more broadly, and the consequences those policy choices have on the job market, the marriage “market”, and other aspects of our culture.

“A Christian culture is one in which identifying as Christian is ‘normal,’ and civil and social instruments promote conformity to biblical morality and patterns of thought.”
James R. Wood@jamesrwoodtheo

in this month's issue of @firstthingsmag I have an essay on the idea of "cultural Christianity" -- what it means, what it doesn't, and how it relates to conversion/evangelism, hypocrisy, and the public good

“Boomers also hold roughly 51 percent of all U.S. household wealth, more than $85 trillion in assets, which means it is not merely in homeownership that they hold a major advantage over young Americans. The path to financial freedom is undeniably harder for young Americans.” @carmel_writes

The girlboss vs tradwife fight is usually presented as a matter of choice. But most women actually experience it as the two-income trap. What is framed as free choice, empowerment, or independence in fact is dictated by a landscape of invisible strings and supports, both cultural and concrete incentives created by public policy. For many, the girlboss path is not “independent” but heavily subsidized by the taxpayer and encouraged each step of the way: from university majors that don’t pay for themselves without government help, to promotions made under threat of CRA lawsuit, to mass immigration artificially keeping the price of hired replacement domestic labor down. Betty Draper’s dependency on her husband was obvious. The girlboss’ dependence on society, and ability to redistribute the costs of her choices, might be less obvious, but no less real. As recently as 1970 women weren't allowed to compete in marathons because of the detrimental effects on their health/cycle. Great, thought-provoking piece on Evie magazine and women's health from @Hannah_Cristine at @thelampmagazine

It's not the working that we should be discouraging. Women have been mothering and producing simultaneously from the beginning of time. It's the offsite. It is the separation. It is the extended outsourcing of childcare. For women that can or must help provide for their families, most of the young women I know are doing it at home and around their children's needs. Like most women around the world.

Books like these are so important for mothers to read. We are on the frontline of protecting the existence of true childhoods: mudcakes and stick forts included. Your motherhood is their childhood. But how can you know what a mother or child is for if you don’t know what a *human* is for?

For less than $100 you could be assured of never going bankrupt over medical bills. Now we pay a thousand a month for worse coverage. But don’t worry, your $20/month birth control that gives you blood clots is fully covered!

This topic has already been addressed by Catherine Pakaluk in Hannah's Children. She interviewed 55 college educated women with 5+ children. The twelve that made it into the book were all very religious. Religion was an important reason for fertility. She tried finding nonreligious/atheist samples, but there were basically none. Fertility cults aren't the solution.
