@DreadOKnights @BenNollWeather Based on GHCND dataset for Cornwall (other side of Storm King), previous record was on September 2, 2021 with about 5.8" rain and then 31 July, 2016 with 5.5" rain.

Current scene in West Point, New York / #HudsonValley 🌊 The radar estimates that over 10 inches of rain fell today, nearly the amount that typically falls over an entire summer! ⚠️ There’s more rain to come… 📸 Megan Cardone via a resident of West Point, NY

Latest casualty of shrinkflation is coffee going from 12 oz to 300 g. That said, if that's the cost of moving to metric, it might just be worth it!

@Helios_Movement Crazy that study is over 100 years old. I do wonder why they didn't hold the oil/fat percentage constant. Wouldn't a diet of 5% oil be signif worse than one with just 1.5% butter fat?

Crazy to think 30 years ago polarization and extremism were already a problem

And here is the rest of the toxic social media feedback loop: extremist views are amplified and rewarded, which induces politicians to pander extremist views and sanction bad behavior. The result? Failing democracy. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl… by @jbview

@pettertornberg If the incentive structure for social media changed (eg penalize outrage), would this intensification still exist?

By pushing us to interact with people from the other side, social media drives conflict - and the alignment of identities along partisan lines. Social media produces political tribes, which intensifies affective polarization. 8/

Social media has been broadly linked to intensifying political polarization. But why would social media drive polarization? My new paper in PNAS suggests that the reason might not be what you think... 🧵 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

@TobiasRose @elonmusk There's plenty of research showing that status quo incentive structure promotes polarization and outrage. So why not change the incentive structure and introduce negative feedback so users can self-regulate.

@TobiasRose @elonmusk If you start with a different set of starting assumptions about how social media incentives work, these tradeoffs can go away.

Re-upping. Twitter is a very hard problem. Hope @elonmusk will talk to teams in the trenches researching it. Any social media content moderation is a series of painful tradeoffs between clearly "positive" values: Free Speech↔️Factual info Privacy↔️Safety Virality↔️Accuracy etc.
Tobias Rose-Stockwell@TobiasRose

I have mixed feelings on @elonmusk's Twitter purchase Pro: Elon is a very smart guy, who tends to find ways to fix broken systems, make them work better than before. Con: Twitter isn't rocket science, it's social science, which is messier and more complex. A small thread:

@ProfessorGeraci Initial results seem promising. Personally I like the idea of an alternative narrative to AI apocalypse and instead AI that helps us be better.
