This is it. This 100%. People want to tell stories, create fantasy worlds, etc and assume writing is the easiest medium to do it in.

A lot of it is probably people who like other storytelling media- e.g. movies, TV, games- wanting to tell a story and choosing writing as the path of least resistance. There's no production cost, and unlike drawing, programming, etc. everyone already knows how to write.
