@Molson_Hart This is dumb. Compounding is math. Math is right.

Compounding is a mostly fake concept. It exists because it’s an effective way to sell financial products and services. What looks like compounding is mostly monetary inflation. Money supply must grow by a percentage, not a fixed amount, so asset prices compound. Improvement happens in discrete events eg a realization. You then actuate it more like a miner mines a mine than a linear increase in overall well being. You start slow, accelerate, and then slow down as the improvement is implemented. Outside of financial markets there really is no “compounding” as we know it, or I should, it is marketed. Having more money rarely if ever is an accelerant to a business. Again, it’s all about those discrete improvements. I get how skill and interact with money and an improving team to output, theoretically better work, but in reality results are highly volatile. Business cycles, market changes, and, again, improvements which can manifest themselves as new products and services all trump whatever theoretical benefit is achieved from compounding within a business. Business results are very volatile in my experience. They look nothing like 1.07^n (compounding). Look at Steve Jobs career. It looks nothing like compounding. It looks up and down and then he’d discover something, make it happen, profit, and then have to make a new improvement. It only looks like compounding on the stock graph. In any case, assume it’s true. You may think “I will be so rich in 10-20-30 years because of compounding”. Never mind the fact that that has only been the case in one country in the entire world and only in the modern era (every other country’s markets get periodically wiped out by currency implosions, revolutions, wars). You’ll be rich but you’ll also be way older. If you want to have sex with women on a boat, you’re much better off renting a dilapidated houseboat right now while you’re young than grinding like a dog for 30 years to have sex with prostitutes who pretend to enjoy being sexed by an old man on viagra. But “compounding”. Mo’ money, mo’ problems, but “compounding”. It’s fake. Our lives are not up and to the right, they are up and down, and unpredictable multidimensional zig zags as we navigate 3d map of pitfalls and pots of gold. Forget compounding and just go out and do the stuff you want to do and if you really can’t do that stuff, do the stuff that will let you do that other stuff later. But, compounding? Good luck with that
