Day 2 at #BAQ2026 focused on a key question: How can countries accelerate clean air solutions? Discussions highlighted the need to: 🔹 Integrate super pollutant mitigation 🔹 Strengthen technical capacity 🔹 Scale practical sectoral interventions Speakers also emphasised that real progress will require stronger alignment between air pollution control, climate action, health policy, and development planning areas that often remain fragmented across Asia. At #BAQ2026, the Asia Roadmap to End Open Burning of Waste and new AQMx sectoral guidance were launched today. Open waste burning remains one of the most overlooked sources of air pollution in Asia, with 256 million tonnes of waste burned annually, largely due to limited waste collection, weak enforcement, and lack of affordable alternatives. At the same time, transport emissions continue to drive urban air pollution across the region. The new AQMX guidance provides practical tools to help governments act across both sectors, from eliminating open waste burning to strengthening vehicle inspection and maintenance programmes and vehicle emission standards. Together, these tools support countries in scaling solutions, strengthening policy implementation, and accelerating progress toward cleaner air. What is happening at the BAQ 2026? Here’s a glimpse of the conversations and collaborations shaping this year’s conference.

Methane mitigation across the LNG supply chain is one of the fastest ways to slow warming, and collaboration is key in Asia-Pacific. At #APFSD in Bangkok, @EnvDefenseFund, @CCACoalition & @UNESCAP convened leaders from 10+ countries to turn methane solutions into action.

What do rice farmers need to shift to low-emission practices? We asked them. Three insights stood out: • Incentives work, especially simple, direct ones. In Thailand, 80% of farmers preferred direct cash payments; average acceptable compensation clustered around THB 1,200/ha, varying widely by province. The data showed that incentives worked best when calibrated to local realities. • Short contracts beat long promises. Across countries, farmers favoured 5–7 year commitments over decade-plus terms, even at higher prices, implying carbon programs should prioritise flexibility and renewal options. • Training de-risks adoption: Skills support and extension boost willingness to adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying, Direct-Seeded Rice (DSR), and improved straw management, especially when paired with fair, on-time payments. A @CCACoalition-funded project, implemented by the @irri, worked with farmers in the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to inform policies and incentives that support low-emission rice farming.
