Last week I lost my first Grandpa. I was named after him (Southern Italy traditions), I learnt so much about life thanks to him and I was devastated to learn he was gone. I was lucky to grow up with him for years. He never complained despite suffering incredible pains in the last few weeks. He always said “I am feeling like a lion”, despite feeling horrible recently, while I held his hand and cleaned his grieving eyes. At least, he isn’t suffering anymore now. He was a longstanding proud Alpino - Italy’s and the oldest active mountain infantry in the world - and he never felt to express his pain whilst nowadays every little minor distress is dramatised and institutionalised. Old school guy. For some reason, I have always felt an eternal bond between him and me. For some reason, I felt he was going to die soon and so I started to listen to “Hollywood Forever Cemetery” by Father John Misty - you’ll understand why from the lyrics. And this is an Alpino hat. He was so proud of it, after serving his country for so many years. Always in my heart. 🇮🇹❤️ 🪖🎖️
