The Gagne trade was the beginning of the end for Homer. Instead of trading Carter for one of the LA goalies (the heavy rumor at the time) he chose to dump Gagne for nothing and sign Zherdev/Meszaros.
Goaltending plagued the Flyers' the next 2 yrs along with the Pronger injury.

Flyers had an opportunity to acquire Tim Thomas 1-for-1 for Gagne that summer but: * Simon would not waive his NTC at that point. Thomas was fine with coming to Philly. * Only reason Flyers needed to move Gagne was cap space. The contracts were a wash. * If a Gagne for Thomas trade had happened, Flyers would have tried other ways to shed cap. Info was compiled by Jay Greenberg in Flyers at 50 after interviews with Paul Holmgren and Gagne. Ultimately, Gagne would waive for Tampa, and Tampa alone, after conversations with Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier.
