I would rather try and fail to get Matthews back to 100% and come up empty-handed than trade him now for a bad return in fear that it could get worse later. Both of those pathways lead to the same dead end anyway. If you get him back in gear, you still have a shot at another lap.

I'm happy for Steeves but this drives me nuts. They scouted and recruited this guy. He plays in your org for four seasons. He plays 247 AHL games and has 216 points. The longest cup of coffee you gave him was seven games. Now he's a contributor on a divisional rival. Sick.

I assume one big factor here is that the Leafs are stuck in their own zone more in the Treliving/Berube era, which leaves Matthews needing to soak pucks instead of stripping them

Amid all the talk about him not caring, losing a step, and/or having a chronic injury, Auston Matthews is averaging 4.89 blocked shots:60 this year.
No forward that plays >20:00 a night has done that over a full, 50+ GP season since we started counting blocks
