Thanks for the question @gblondelle. Actually it is both. The parallel with the NASA TRL makes explaining MRL easier. And I found the 9 levels rather convenient: 1,2,3 for project development in progress, 4,5,6 for growing adoption and 7,8,9 for market development.

The Market Readiness Level is a great approach to make regular IT users comfortable with Open Source projects. @cedricth presents the different levels at @SFScon.
