A year ago this week, Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Texas. But it was not until this past February, 11 months after the shooting, that ICE confirmed its involvement. It's now become the first publicly known instance of ICE fatally shooting a U.S. citizen as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. While the Department of Homeland Security says Martinez intentionally rammed his vehicle into an agent, recently released body cam footage — which shows shots being fired into Martinez's vehicle — calls that narrative into question. And one year later, Martinez's family is still searching for answers. @GeoffRBennett spoke with Ruben Martinez's mother, Rachel Reyes, and her attorney, Charles Stam.

Why is Trump’s DOJ fighting to release Alex Smirnov from jail? Smirnov, who has significant ties to Russian intelligence, fed the FBI bogus claims about Joe Biden getting a $10 million bribe from a Ukrainian oligarch—a lie that fueled Republicans’ failed efforts to impeach Biden. Smirnov pled guilty to lying to the FBI and committing tax evasion and received a 6 year sentence. A year later, Trump’s DOJ wants him set free. Why? Russia, Russia, Russia indeed.

Brendan Carr’s authoritarian warning — that networks risk their broadcasting licenses for Iran war reporting that the government doesn’t like — is outrageous. When the government demands the press become a state mouthpiece under the threat of punishment, something has gone very wrong. In 2019, Carr said: “Should the government censor speech it doesn’t like? Of course not. The FCC does not have a roving mandate to police speech in the name of the ‘public interest.’” But today, Carr cites the “public interest” to blatantly threaten news outlets because the president doesn’t like their reporting. Again and again, Carr’s tenure as FCC chairman has been marked by his shameless willingness to bully and threaten our free press. But even by Carr’s standards, today’s hypocrisy is shocking — and dangerous. The American people demand uncensored news about the men and women serving in our armed forces. Our right to a free press is one of the core American freedoms those in uniform have sworn to support and defend. It is long past time for our government officials to remember their own oaths to uphold the Constitution — starting with the First Amendment.

Trump himself identified a lawful alternative and then cheerfully narrated its rejection for non-military reasons. That's not a fog-of-war ambiguity. That's a confession. The compounding moral failure: the admission that gratuitous destruction was chosen over utility, and the commander-in-chief is amused by it.

He treats death as though it's something to laugh about. I can't think of any American or Western leader who ever talked about such matters in such an emotionless and cavalier way. There's something missing in this guy. There's something that's inside the vast majority of us that isn't present in this president. It's very unsettling.
