@Cornell_Turf Natives, especially grasses are totally underused on golf courses. This is a great example of how to use them. I’ll bet you have tons of skippers (butterflies) on the property also. Thanks for this post.

The Residents of Bethpage: Native Species One of Bethpage Black’s signature features is its native grass areas—stands of bluestem, broomsedge and Danthonia species. These areas were originally propagated by expert horticulturist Victor Azzaretto and are skillfully maintained today by Mike Hadley and the Black Course crew. The park’s Long Island landscape is also home to a rich community of wildlife, including tree swallows, bluebirds, warblers, red-tailed hawks and great horned owls. Park ecologist and naturalists track these populations and golfers are encouraged to share their own wildlife sightings with staff. “Since we are a state park…there are 1,500 acres of permanent residents, wildlife. They don’t have a voice, so we have to be their voice,” said Andrew Wilson, director of agronomy at Bethpage State Park.

@jim_pav @ArkansasTurf @turfmonkeyboy Great advice. Make sure to check at least once every two weeks and kick out house sparrows and Blue birds hang around all winter so winter food is important. Great picture.

@ArkansasTurf @turfmonkeyboy I have over 35 boxes and some have bluebirds in them every year, some have swallows every year. Try planting native plants that will attract bluebirds, like serviceberry, dogwood, coneflowers, Eastern red cedar, American cranberry and arrowwood viburnum, and, elderberry.
