One of the reasons we struggle when teams change to more defensive shape is because our philosophy and principles are not yet strong enough. If we press well consistently, move the ball at good pace, control possession efficiently and make teams play our game, we will control games irrespective of the shape they setup. I always use Sarri's Napoli as an example, because Sarri is one of the managers who doesn't like to adapt to the opponent, rather the opponent adapt to his team. He made his football at Napoli too efficient and effective that he played every game with the same tactics. Every team they faced them knew how they would setup and how they would move the ball, but it's was so efficient that stopping how they move in and out of possession and move the ball became almost an impossible task for opponents. That's what we are missing. We aren't yet close up the peak of the principles of Maresca's football. Unfortunately, it can only be helped if he has the right profiles in the key positions with quality backups and then quality training time. This is one of the reasons why Sarri couldn't do better than he did at Napoli and Chelsea elsewhere. Jorginho was everything to him. He found the perfect profiles at Napoli. So, if the principles and philosophy aren't holding up, we can change shape and be more direct. But is Maresca willing to make that change or keep trying to find different solutions within his principles and philosophy? Time will tell.
