@BenjaminDEKR @genejchan They streamline a lot of stuff because they only have 2.5 hours. The book goes into a lot of detail on how Grace and Rocky figure out how to communicate. It takes a while. When you have a movie you have to glaze over the small stuff to get the main points.

A big problem with Project Hail Mary: the science and engineering is so dumbed-down that it's borderline comical. Problems get solved almost magically, with no process or iteration. He meets alien life, shows it a clock, and five minutes later is having conversations. (His laptop magically translated the language, I guess.) Grace is charming (unbelievably so) but isn't shown as a good scientist. He's shown as a fantastically-lucky scientist. The Big Bang Theory had a similar problem, pretending to be a show for smart, techy people but mostly just winking at it. In other words it's pop science when the world desperately needs hard engineering to be celebrated. Still a good movie, but not nearly the classic it could and should have been.

The maximum an individual can legally donate to a candidate in an election is $3300. Elon donated $277M to Trump in 2024 because of loopholes rich people use to buy elections. If you care about election integrity — overturn Citizens United so our elections aren’t auctions.

@JezCorden @Septic_Sauce The alternative is 10 year game development cycles. I don't care how they do it, or what they do, if it delivers the games in half the time fame compared to what they're doing now it's a win in my book. 👍

@pickyourownnose @Senninsage Not natively, but with DLSS you can. No one is pushing for native resolutions. All that matters is how it looks on your TV.

Digital Foundry said the gap between Helix and PS6, based on rumored specs is smaller than Series X and PS5. Except they appear to brush past the massive CPU advantage over PS6, and, unlike Series X, Helix won't be power constrained.

@Shpeshal_Nick With the quality of AI upscaling, native resolutions are meaningless. All that matters is image quality. I'm playing RE9 on my 4070 Super with path tracing and it looks incredible on my TV.

I worry this pursuit of path tracing for next gen consoles won't be doing us any favours Path tracing is incredible when the hardware can pull it off. But I doubt it will be worth the inevitable compromises We don't even have native 4K60 in the current gen

@astaranx @Senninsage But the Switch 2 isn't more powerful than a Steam Deck. Much weaker CPU. The difference is DLSS cleaning up the image and bespoke ports coded to the metal. They always said the DLSS and specific ports would cause the Switch 2 to punch above its weight.

@Senninsage I don’t trust DF anymore they’re clueless. Remember their take when they said the Switch 2 won’t be more powerful or at level of the Steamdeck ? Yes they’re out of touch.

@TheEggman64 Counter point, a $1200 pre-built PC with 5080 performance is a great entry price point into high end PC gaming. This is a niche device not a mass market one. Sony will still try and price their console for mass market appeal.

A $1,200 Xbox is bad because... - that's obviously really expensive - it puts gaming further out of reach for many - it'll encourage Sony to go for a higher price for PS6 - it makes it harder to new people into gaming (or away from Roblox and Fortnite)

@cgpartlow @Pirat_Nation Yep, same Silicon Only difference is they’re slightly cut down iirc the CPU is 6 cores instead of 8 and the GPU is 28CUs instead of 36CUs It’s basically the Steam Machine specs but different architectures

A modder hacked the PS5 to run Linux. Now it's a Steam Machine.

@Feld2K @carygolomb Not a 9070 the successor to the 9070xt. RDNA5 has a significant boost to Ray Tracing from RDNA4. It's a generational boost not an incremental one.

@cgpartlow @carygolomb so two generations behind a year after it launches. a 9070 isnt close to a 5090 btw and amd still struggles in ray tracing. they have to keep heat down

Would you buy this PC if it was $1500 but also played Xbox games as well as PC games? Also it's a lot smaller and fits in your living room. Seeing some people wondering who would even want something like this. I guess it's just me.

✅ 4K HDMI Video + Audio ✅ All USB ports Currently running at 3.2 GHz CPU & 2.0 GHz GPU. It can be boosted to 3.5 GHz CPU and 2.23 Ghz GPU, but my PS5 slim model overheats too quickly.

I ported Linux to the PS5 and turned it into a Steam Machine. Running GTA 5 Enhanced with Ray Tracing. 🤯

@NeoGameSpark Leaked specs via MLID have it at around slightly better than 5080. That's a pretty cheap high end PC for $1000 if that's the case. But I could see this being $1200. It's meant to be niche though, and to not be sold at a loss.

Only way I could potentially see this price range “working” (yeah it’ll be SUPER NICHE) is if there’s enough performance to justify the price and maybe Microsoft subsidizes it as a “lower cost” entry to PC gaming. But if not, OH BUDDY LOL

At this point you’re spending $1,200 for a limited computer that can only play approved games. Better to just buy the Steam Machine, which is a literal actual computer, or just build your own rig. Don’t spend $1200 to buy your way into servitude. Choose freedom. Build the PC.
